Alignment issues

I recently installed turbo tie rods on the 84 Carerra, I took it into my local shop that has done alignment work for me before. They put it on the rack and the tech was unable to mount the alignment tools to my wheels, he said that the wheel protection lip on my tire was prohibiting him from mounting the tool. It forced it off the edge of the rim. Has anyone else dealt with this, if so how did you overcome it. I have standard Fuch's on my car.

I installed the turbo ties last week and had my local tire place set the toe, etc. They had no problem putting it on the alignment machine....
Standard Fuchs w/ Dunlop FM901's. My tires do have a pretty thick wheel protecting lip on them too.
