RSR/IROC Bumpers

Don't want to beat a dead horse. But .............
I'm thinking up putting both front and rear fiberglass RSR/IROC bumpers on my 77 Carrera 3.0.
But ................
How ugly does it look with a front license plate ? The local gendarme gets kind of touchy on occasion. And Montana law requires them.
I could cover the cooler screen in the winter. But wouldn't work in the summer, when I do most of my motoring.

Here is a pic of my solution to the same problem. Washington Sate Patrol checks for front plates here in my part of the state.
I had Multicraft Plastic in Portland Oregon make me a clear plastic filler piece the same size as the fiberglass blank that comes with the bumpers.

There are some differences between 1973RS and 1974 RSR/IROC but the idea will work. The front area in the bumper is the LAST place I would put a cooler on a street car so the licence plate seemed like a natural. When I get some time I am going to see if I might be able to install a pair of driving lights one on each side of the plate. The opening is longer than the plate by about 6".

I also thought that by plugging that hole I would reduce lift.

RLJ, did you have to trim your plate to get it to fit in the hole? It looks as if you've cut the bottom or the top of the plate off.

Good observation. I folded the bottom edge back flush with the GT Racing front bumper. In Washington now we have no front sticker to be changed every year so that helps.

Maybe off thread a bit but I'm curious ...

In the 'spirit' of the law (ie...spirited enforcement of red light running vis a vis ease of laser bouncing), would displaying your numbers/letters satisfy the cops? Is a plate required or would your pertinent information be enough? Clarifying this could open up alot of design options.

Of course, piss off a cop and even a plate won't do - for whatever reason a cop might give you. I know I'm going out on a limb by asking a legal question that might involve logic.

Seriously, any ideas or comments?

Brian, I was thinking the same thing. My Montana plate is 77 911C. I was thinking of having a Euro plate made too match. And see if that would work. Might take the question to the Highway Patrol. Their office is right down the street.

The RS/IROC front bumper is wider than your bumper to suit the Turbo type flares.

Fitting the oil cooler in the bumper will require modifications to the steelwork at the front of the trunk to clear the cooler and allow air to flow through it and under the car, trust me, I am converting a '74 Carrera to a 3.0RS right now. Leave the cooler in the wing.

Here is a picture of an original 3.0RS. The front panel has been moved back about 6 inches where the jack would normally have mounted. The oil pipes are visible where have have been passed through the inner fender into the trunk.

Across the pond there are aftermarket fabricators that make both standard RSR bumpers, and a narrow version to fit standard 74 plus fenders.
I have a Lemke/Terbatrol in the wing. But if I need more cooling, I may add an additional cooler in series up front. The extra one is thinner version of the same. But so, far I don't need it.
The tail gave me enough extra cooling to keep my temp in control.

I really like the look of the Carrera 3.0 RS road version.

Cary, Which tail do you have? Did it help cooling by directing more air-flow into engine compartment? Please explain, haven't heard this before. Thanks.

On the car now is a Euro solid rubber SC tail. Best I can tell my normal operating temp dropped 10 - 12 degrees.
But I don't do any stop and go driving. We don't even have a traffic light in my town. LOL.

I'm no aero engineer, but the flat tray collects the air as it passes over the car and forces it thru the engine compartment. Which pushes cooler and cleaner air thru the engine fan.

No scientific data. Just my personal observations.

I have a factory 76 Turbo tail for my Carrera 3.0 RS look a like project.

Hello

In germany cars must have license plates on both ends from the car and they are normaly double the size from US plates.

So there is enough space on the bumpers for them.

Porsche used "stick on" frontplates in the 70´s but they got baned from the goverment in the 80´s.

On the RSR and the SC/RS frontbumper the plate is mountet abouve the cooling screen on the front edge from the bumper.

Only fake cars use to mount them on the screen ( Anyhow no coolers )
