Trick to sealing header muffler joint on early 2 bolts?
Guys,
Any tricks to getting a good seal between the exhaust header and muffler joint on the early 2 bolt flange? It seems that I've never got a good seal no matter what I do, whether I use new gaskets or not. It almost seems that a slightly thicker gasket is needed. I've made sure both surfaces are perfectly flat and line up well. I always seem to get a minor leak or two that you can feel while the engine is running. Thanks, Dion

I usually try and and go up in bolt size and go with a finer threaded bolt. Then make sure everything is aligned well - loosen up the muffler straps, torque the muffler/header connection - THEN firm up the muffler straps.

Besides JeremyD's tips, I have resorted to doubling the gaskets at the flange joints when they are poorly aligned. This allows more compression of the gasket material when tightening and can sometimes seal a leak.

Thanks guys.
I had some fel-pro rubberized gasket material and made a couple of sandwiches for the leaky side gasket, and it improved it 100%. Dion
