How did you get the rear seat bottoms? That looks like a nice alternative to putting in the seat cushions...I was still debating on whether I wanted to put them in or not...as I just have car seats going in the back.

I had Tony at Autobahn make the carpet for me and told him "rear seat delete" and that's the way it came.
Not doing an RS clone or R look.....Just doing what I pictured in my head for a 911 hotrod sort of thing. |

I finished up putting in Damplier today. I knew I didn't order enough to do 100%, and I didn't plan to either. So here is what I covered. I did a tap test and put down squares of Damplier where I thought it might be needed. Hopefully it does the job it's suppose to with how I installed it. I did try to cover as much of the roof as possible, as I don't plan on adding anything else to it. Luxury Liner would just make it way too thick for moving parts like the sunroof, and I want to ensure the headliner has a good fit.
I also was able to start the Heat Wave install. Unfortunately, I think I may come up a little short as I only orders two sheets worth. We'll see. I already used one sheet as shown...so I only have one sheet left to get the seat bottom areas. Also, don't under estimate the prep work. I used some brown paper to make a template, which is still a pain to do...and then used that to shape the Heat Wave. Taping all the edges takes a lot of time. I bought the Bulk Pack, which is 36.5 sq ft. It comes in sheets that are about 12 x 20...and you can see the size of one sheet on the roof in the center. If you pull up the asphalt on the floor boards, the sheets a little bit smaller. I've kept four sheets to do the doors, which should cover almost 100% I think, and then I kept another two sheets to do the sunroof at 100%. All that cost me about $159...and it was the Pro version. Second Skin only sells in in certain quanitities, which is how I came up with the 36.5 number. If you don't plan on doing the roof like I did, then you should almost be able to get most of the rest of the car, as you have about 4-5 extra sheets to work with.

Today I tried to tackle the headliner. After fooling around with it for a time, I realized that I have no talent nor patience for projects listed as 5 greasemonkies per Wayne's 101 Projects book. So I undid everything I started today and decided to start looking into outsourcing it. I knew from the start this project would be iffy...but I thought I would give it a try. What I don't want, is something that looks awful for the next 20 years because I'm not up to the task. :/

Get a price for them to do the carpet as well. Your wife will thank you for outsourcing these projects. BTW, Does your wife hate your car yet?:D
As I stated in an earlier post I watched for a few hours while mine was done. Looked like a pain in the but. If you have the remnants of the old headliner it will help the guy who does it. He will be able to see where the folds are and where the originals terminated and such. He will likely want the front window out to complete the project as well. New window seals all the way around? |
All the windows are currently out. In the picture you may see the front window...but it's just sitting there as I have no where to put it...it's not attached. I have all the new window seals sitting on a shelf, along with a new sunroof seal.
Surprisingly, my wife is still very supportive. I think she's motivated to keep me motivated to complete it so she can have her SUV back. We're currently a one-car family right now. Anyone have any suggestions of places to get the headliner done in Las Vegas? Think I should go with a Porsche shop or look into an uphostery shop? Not sure what's more important...people knowing about Porsches or people knowing about headliners. |
I think I'd try and find a shop that knows both.....Porsches AND headliners!
Do you belong to the local LV PCA club? I'm sure they could steer you to (or away) from a shop that could handle the job. |

I personally would look for a good upholstry shop. Those guy do a couple headliners a week. Local Porsche shop likely not. While they are at it have them replace the a arm leather if it is donged up at all.

After searching a bit, I came across an uphostery shop that specializes in European cars to include Porsches. Over the phone he quoted me about $100 seeing how I did so much work already...but he said he would need to see the car before a real estimate. I asked how much to do the carpets when I get all the deadener in...and he was thinking $650. I doubt I'll let him do the carpets...but the headliner looks like a really good deal to me.
So I started working on the sunroof some more. Took off the headliner and then started applying Damplifier Pro to it...and I think I made a mistake. Without thinking, I added it to the section that had the headliner with the idea that I was going to cover the ceiling 100%. But when I finished, I realized that Damplifier makes it really heavy, and the tin only snaps in at the front, which makes the back hang. I'm hoping that it will still work...but I'm kind of kicking myself. Damplifier doesn't come off very well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1273813683.jpg I also finished up applying all the Heatwave Pro. Heatwave is a really slow process because it's hard to cut and you have to mask all the edges. I'm hoping Luxury Liner goes a lot quicker and is easier to install. Still at it. I eventually took the car to an uphostery shop that was recommended by the mechanic I use. Two frusterating weeks later, he tells me I can pick up the car.
First glance, the car looks awesome. Windows are in and the headliner is nice and soft...good looking. But now that I have it home and am installing the sunroof...I notice a few issues. First, the headliner doesn't hug the roof...but it's stretched over the curves. Second, I noticed that they may have damaged my ceiling where the sunroof is. Driver's side towards the back of the sunroof opening, the ceiling looks like it starts to sag. Very disappointing. Take it to a pro to get professional work done, and it looks like I got less than outstanding. :mad: Meanwhile...having issues installing the sunroof. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/548065-sunroof-install-question.html Additionally...it looks like Dampflier Pro on the sunroof insert is too heavy. But nothing I can do about it now. Just have to be extra cautionous when I open and close...that is when I get it installed all the way. |
use some gloves, a very sharp razor and some mineral spirits to remove the damplifier. it is a long, crappy process but it can be done if it absolutely has to be.
