JDM quick disconnect installed.

No more wriggling between the Sparco seat and the wheel to get out of my 911. Thanks to uwanna's post in this thread I installed a $20 JDM steering wheel disconnect ($10 for the unit and $10 in shipping). Since the car still sees some street use, retaining the horn button was a requirement. I'm pretty pleased with the unit. There is no play in the wheel when installed. It's reasonably robust. And with a bit of "blueprinting" using a few files, the steering wheel goes on and off quite easily. Well worth $20.

Heres the obligatory pics.

Nice...and if you lock the steering wheel in the trunk when you park it...it makes for a good anti-theft device...LOL

Fixed it.

The release goes between the Momo hub and wheel, so It's not for a particular make or model. The release is also drilled for some other six bolt steering wheel pattern.

Rob,
Thought you'd like it if you tried it! I've now got three different wheels with JDM adapters that I can use, depending on my whim, and I'm only in it for $60!
Another big plus is the accessability when cleaning the interior or (yuk) working under the dash!

Grant,

You got me into this too. Good addition. I only have one Momo right now but I did buy 3 couplers for the new wheels I am going to get!!!

Simply dress all cast edges with a file. A very fine triangular file worked great.

Fild report...

I'm back to provide a field report on the JDM disconnect.

Pro:
  • Works well
  • Works easily
  • Makes getting in and out simple
  • It costs just $20 ($10 for the unit, and $10 shipping)

Con:
  • I grazed the rumble strips, and the plastic horn connection piece in the middle of the release popped out. That lead to unpredictable nano-second horn beeps for a few laps. Eventually I figured out what that occasional odd "beeping" was. It was me!
  • The unit is WAY looser after a day at the track. The wheel is secure, but it wobbles a slight bit, and rattles a touch over bumps when driving on the street. (No rattles on the track because I always have a good grip on the thing.)

Conclusion:
  • I think I'll sacrifice a working horn, pony up the cash, and buy a high-priced steering wheel disconnect. Unfortunately, that will probably also mean purchasing a new dished steering wheel.

I agree completely, if I were doing track events, I would spring for a high dollar quick release unit. But, using my Pcar as an occasional driver. I am pleased with the JDM unit and have no problems with it! Plus, I can't do without a horn!

FYI, the SnapOff Race will allow you to keep your horn. Also, it's the same thickness as the JDM disconnect that you have.

I have the JDM and like it for street use. I bet you could tighten it up by shimming or putting in thicker rubber. There are 3 or 4 rubber bumpers in there to keep tension on the wheel.....maybe a couple of them need to be thicker.
