NADA lists the 78 911 Coupe original MSRP at $19,500. The targa for the same year is listed at $20,775.

JeffsSS,
Welcome to the Forum
You will find a lot of help here.

Are you looking to buy a 911SC?

This forum can help take any mystery out of the process and help you find what you want and best opportunity for decades of enjoyment.

The Pelican archives are full of good information.
While the Pelican Search Function can seem a bit obtuse, all the information is there. This thread can help you make sense of it all.

Where are you located?

Again, WELCOME.

Best,
Grady

hi Grady,

I'm looking for a toy. I have always liked porsche but never took the plunge. I've driven yota mr2s for entertainment in the past and I'm entertaining the idea of a toy like a old 911.

not too concerned with the cost of maintaining, but just looking for original stats. something to look over.

JeffsSS,

Well … for now just read and look.
Do NOT just jump in and buy something.
Educate yourself.
It will add to enjoying the ‘toy’ when it happens.
You have the power over your decision when you have your money in your pocket.
After the purchase, no so much.

Whatever else, Porsches are still cars.
Some have had attention lavished on them since day one.
Some have been driven hard and put away wet.
Worse, some have been abused and neglected.

You will want the best one you can find for sale and at a price you are willing to pay.
Most ‘nice’ cars are not for sale and are being enjoyed.
The good news is there are always a few really good ones around.
All the ‘derelict’ cars are for sale.

You need to learn what it is you want.
You need to learn to recognize the good from the other.
Never buy anything without a knowledgeable and through Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI).

I suppose your first decision might be: Coupe or Targa.
If you are considering 911SC (’78-’83), you could extend that to include the 911 Carreras (’84-’89).

It is ALL about condition.

Again, Welcome.

Best,
Grady

6.3 sec 0-60 seems a little optimistic ... I figured it was around 6.7 - 6.9.

You may enjoy reading some books.

The Porsche 911 Story - Frere
Porsche 911SC Companion - Streather
Porsche 911 Buyers Guide - Leffingwell
The Used 911 Story - Zimmermann

Check out your local used bookstore, they are a goldmine of inexpensive coffee-table type books on Porsche by people like Mike McCarthy et al.

Cheers

Listen to Grady. . .he's forgotten more than most of us here have ever learned. Classifieds section here might be the place to find a car. Pelicans usually care about their cars. Other threads on this forum will confirm the addiction. . .

Hi Jeff, I also have a 78 911 SC. The real joy of my car isn't the 0-60 by the way, it's the corners. The car has such a great visceral feel to it, and you can put it exactly where you want it in the corner with throttle and steering....all the while with a very large grin! There's a lot of character in these cars that I've never gotten from my previous Japanese sports cars.

The SC are great cars, but obviously the later Carreras are more sorted and probably easier to find good examples.

Like Grady says, do some research here to see the pros and cons and what people do to modifiy them so you have an idea of what you're getting into and what you might want to do.

Here are a few pics of Blackjack. Good luck and post back when you've pulled the trigger!

Cheers - CraigD
