Unhappy Altenator woes....refresh my memory

On my 83 SC.....

Key is on. the oil and alternator light should come on....when the alternator light does not....it means that the bulb is burnt out and no charging of the battery?

What else if any?

Current symptoms, car sits for two-three days and has dead battery.

Alt light does not light when ignition is on, not running, but battery will charge up and start at work to get home....will start next day, but not after three day weekend.

Alt light does not glow when running.......

The lamp completes an electrical path to provide excitation current to the alternator field windings. Therefore, burnt-out bulb=no charging.
It's a screwy set-up, but that's the way it is.

That's the only way to see if the bulb is burnt out. If the Regulator or alternator has failed the bulb will not light either. The DF wire may also be off it's terminal.

Bulb was sitting behind the gauge....must have worked it's way out. Charging up the battery and will see if it holds a charge and to test when fully up.....the PO put in a cheapy battery and it may be toast.

Stay tuned....
