Todd's 3.6 Gets Glasurit Single Stage

Wanted to share my experience using Glasurit 22 single stage on Todd's 911. In one word I would discribe the paint as, stellar! The paint has an amazing ability to keep it's high gloss. One of the features I enjoy the most is watching how the paint flows flat right behing the spray pattern. Of course, the paint also runs very easy so one must take great caution. Even when getting those dreaded drips, they have sanded right out and buffed smoothly. My experience with Glasurit gets five stars.

As I delivered Todd's car, I pulled over and texted him a message that read "your car is scary fast!" The SC accelerates like it's lifting off the ground.

The job was a complete down to metal paint restoration. The old Chiffon White color was tired. The car had been worked on before and had some serious amounts of bondo and gap issues. Here are a few before and after shot's.

What did you use as a build primer or just before the color?

Yes the rocker face delete was a big item for Todd. I agree the car looks so much better without them. Gives the car a slim look.

I used a light gray sealer before paint. My build primer was a polyester primer filler. The high build primer filler allowed me to block flat. I always use a high grade sealer prior to paint.

I like a good sealer! It can really make the top coat even and look great as this car does.

Freddie,

The results speak for themselves.

Always nice to meet a hard working person that is passionate about what they do and actually stands behind their work. All rare traits these days!

That sure is a purty paint job! Freddie...you are indeed an artist. Amazing work on the asymmetical door gaps. Do you specialize in 911's?

Nice ride Todd!

As always Freddie, stunning work!

I hope you don't mind, but on my next project I'm going to steal your procedure for evening the door edge gaps.

Thanks for the kind words... this has definitely been a work in progress. Like usual, mechicals first and there are several things that need to be addressed in a 3.6 conversion. Even this down to bare metal repaint was more than just cosmetic and I wouldn't trust that to just anybody.

Can't beat fresh white paint on a car wiith that much "go fast" installed. The rockers give it such a clean look...especially in white. Looks like a new car, omly better. Well planned/well executed.

Vash, hold your horses! My wife loves Todd's car. I think I should have first chance at buying the car.

Flintstone- yes I only specialize in Porsche...wait I'm scheduled to do a 1965 230sl Merecedes Pagoda for a client in Berkeley. I have a strong liking to this car.

Mr. Village, you can steal my procedure....just one thing, remember me when I'm in Hawaii....Dos XX is fine.

Thanks guys for your words of encouragement of my work.

Freddie,
Very nice work indeed. I hope mine turns out half as good.

I have a question about the door gap issue... My car has the same problem??? Is this normal? I read a post somewhere that explained this variation is intended. (gap at top of door wider than bottom) I like your solution and was toying with the same idea to correct the problem. So, is this flaw found on all/allot of 911's?

Thanks,
Derek

Glasurit, then unrelated...home paint jobs

Howdy Chaps,

Combine response to Glasurit and home paint jobs in one post. Can’t say enough about Glasurit, been using it since 1989, first 21 line and now 22. Can claim their paints are almost completely fuel resistant as the carbs on the bike in my sig were painted silver 11 years ago. Armed with their superb application manual and easy to use mixing stick you can hardly go wrong, runs are easily shaved with a straight edge razor and trash easily cut with 1,500 or 2k grit.

The only concern for hobbyists – besides safety of course…..warning states vapors can cause personality alterations, if I recall – is ensuring uniform shop temp in cold weather for consistent paint lay down and flow. Not a real concern if you like to shoot a bit dry but when tempted to lay down those beautiful wet coats without runs, if not a pro, you gotta get your air and surface temp consistent and within the hardener range. With a good gravity gun you can shoot successfully at HVLP low pressures which keeps the dust down. To take care of any dust lingering, I tape up a 2 squares of furnace filters and attach each to a box fan to draw through, then lightly wet the floor down.

Durability: This stuff is incredible. Painted many bikes but never a car. I took my mine down to body in white in 1992, flipped it on its side and restored the whole thing in a single car garage. I learned the hard way about (not) controlling shop temps trying to heat mine with a construction site torpedo. Compared with the bike results, was not happy with the outcome on this project so after one waxing in 1993, have not waxed it again in the hopes it'd just fall off and save me the hastle of stripping it. Driven pretty much daily since and still has a gloss.
