Question Oil suction hose to/from oil cooler bulging?!!?

Please help! The oil hose that goes to the oil cooler on my 1972 911 has developed a bulge, like a scary looking bubble about 1.5 inches to 2 inches in diameter on the bottom side near the cooler attachment point. It really looks like it might pop, which would be really messy! I will order a new hose and don't plan to drive the car until I resolve what caused this. In the meantime while the car remains parked in the garage waiting for the hose, I am really concerned because I don't understand what this means. To begin with, I thought that was a "suction hose", but the bulging looks like it was caused by really high pressure. Also, the engine seems awfully hot. Does anyone have any clue what this all means? What could cause this? Has anyone else ever seen such a thing? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hoses can fail in many ways. Commonly if the interior breaks down then oil will get into the layers of the hose and cause a bubble at a weaker spot in the outer layers. That could be what happened here.

You need to define "awfully hot" - what temps?

that's an all rubber hose. they just get soft or rock hard depending on age and/or environment. drain the oil tank, then swap out the hose. keep a drain pan under each end. maybe drain the engine too and replace the oil filter and call it an oil change.

My 73.5 T did the same thing, many years ago. The "S" hose between the oil tank and the cooler is a suction hose, and has no oil system pressure. Just a weird failure.

I thought those hoses had an interior braid - but then again I have never cut one of them open. Oh well, my bad.

John is the man and knows these engines better than most people (definitely more than me)- do what he says.

And check the other hoses while you are at it.

Think of it as a tire, when you see the bulge, bad things can happen. Another analogy is an aortic aneurysm, when they bulge and burst, you usually die. Replacement is critical. Steve

There is a manufacturer call URO (?) I believe...their hoses have failed exactly as you've described, mine failed within 15 minutes of installation....

Get a Porsche line....

boy do they. cars that see a lot of heat will turn that hose into a brick in only a few years.
