Fix A Flat Used, cleanup question.
On road recently, woke up to find a flat rear tire. I carry no spare, just Fix A Flat and a tiny aftermarket pump. Jacked the car up a few inches, used both. 24 hours later, after a good deal of abuse, tire still holding air. So the stuff can work beautifully if like me you don't carry a spare.
Question: I'm told this stuff needs to be cleaned out fast as it will corrode the wheel. Anyone know what the best clean up method is?

Have the tire demounted, then go at both it and the rim with soapy water. Oh, also have the flat repaire while doing that.

Where did you hear it would corrode the wheel? I haven't heard that.

Harvey Weidman, a serious Porsche wheel guy, is alleged to have said this. He is also alleged to have said he prefers Slime which doesn't cause problems. Perhaps if he's listening he can straighten us out?

don't leave it in for too long. I experienced it. It eats aluminum wheel for lunch.

I've been using Slime in my ATV wheels since 1999 and haven't had a wheel disintegrate on me yet !
Although i would stand back when the tire tech ever attempts to remove the tire ! Messy is not the word ... lol Cheers ! Phil

I've not heard of the corrosion either, but I wouldn't doubt it. I can vouch for Slime, however. Used it on other allow wheels with no problems, and it is recommend as a preventative from flats--to be use inside the tire/wheel even without a puncture.
BTW, excellent comment about advising the tire tech if you've used these products. Remember, this is the guy you want to treat your Fuchs with special care!

never heard of it eating rims ............
now a question for the OP, why don't you carry a spare ?????????? i understand if its a weight thing, but still would disagree, and of you are at home then you would have the spare there, now if you just don't have one I would suggest you get one. But to the first part, you should get the flat fixed, and clean the inside out, its just nasty, the best thing to equate the "current" fix is you now have chewing gum in your tire trying to hold the air in, its working know but for how long ???????????? It is a temporary fix to a problem .......... americas tire will fix it for free, even if you didn't get it there if you need to save 5 bucks |
