CDI Dead... which MSD to use?

So mechanic said no spark due to dead CDI. I needed a 3 pin, but only have a spare 6 pin, so going the MSD route. I looked at the 6al, but looks like there's two new 6al-2's.... one is laptop programmable.

The car is a '72 with a 2.7 motor, no turbo.... is it worth the extra money to upgrade from the 6al to the 6al-2 and then is it worth the money to get the programmable? I've seen the thread for the turbo guys programming theirs, but normally aspirated?

Why not? It gives you a bit more flexibility and is newer technology.

I have the 6AL in my car and I'm very happy with it.

Just a question with regards to finding a replacement ignition module if you don't mind.
Is MSD the only alternative? I went for the 6AL myself as well, due to what i thought was an upgrade for myself (i.e The Bosch CDI is still good). Based on the Host having it avail as an upgrade, and many on the post also using it.

However, mine lasted for only 5 years max. Not bad considering, but embarrassingly poor compared to my original Bosch Unit which is still working, and no real improvements obtained anyway from Multiple Spark Discharge as such.

I kept the MSD installed thinkin might as well, until it finally failed recently (refer post, 'Brunein 911sc').

I am asking mainly because there seems to be no other brands considered in this price range.

Why not just get the CDI repaired or rebuilt? Several Pelicans do this on the side, PP has one in their parts catalog or there are several shops that can do it.

There are lots of CDI options.

There are several options available. I used the Mallory 6al for several years but have had 3 fail and the last 2 didn't even make it around the block. I'm now using the MSD 6al. I'm hoping that it's old school analog circuitry will last longer than the Mallory did.

just get the bosch unit fixed. it's better than other cheap replacement units.

Bosch is great and expensive although the rebuilts make sense especially on a stock 911




MSD runs hot and I don't have it under the panel cover. When it's 80F outside and you've run the MSD for awhile try holding onto it tight.

BTW........ I'm a fan of the MSD for some applications namely carbs and I take proper wiring into overkill. I've never had one fail on cars or boats.

Roninlb, probably why mine cudn't survive well as well. If I knew this, I wud of installed it inside the cabin. I just thought a racing unit such as the 6al was designed to withstand heat.

I believe heat + MSD are bad

My car does not see high weather tempertures and slow street driving. When a highway becomes very slow I'll open the hood and drive with the hood open. Then the MSD belongs in the cabin in my opinion.

I've thought about installing a fan to blow on my MSD instead of opening the hood

I have a laser temperture meter to take with me on my next ride to the deserts. I want to test how hot the MSD becomes at 100-110F ambient.

I feel MSD gives very good engine performance
