Starting my pain project and need ideas or suggestions

Ok, so its a plain silver narrow bodied 911. I got the bumpers off, and most of the stuff that is easy without getting crazy. I want it to look nice, but it doesnt have to be a ground up restoration. So i'm hoping for suggetions. My valences are shot, and the decklip is maybe beyond repair. the car was hit at some point in the back. I love the early 90's look, but i dont think it would look right with the smooth bumpers. I wouldnt mind a newer front valence with integrated fog lights. Anyone who wants to show off what they did with theirs are more than welcome to show it off. It will help me decide where i want to go with this. The silver is remaining by the way

ps I run 16 in fuchs. The car needs to be lowered. that will come next

Keep the narrow body and make it a lion in sheep's clothing. That's what I did and I am very pleased. JMHO.

Beautiful car Bill. As much as I would love a 3.6, money will not allow for that just yet. Just trying to get good ideas on bumpers and stance maybe. There are so many different bumpers that change the look of the car that its nice to see, and decide upon

Mine looks stock - just like Bill's above (but in Gemini Blue with an S bumper).

I DO like the look of the front bumper on the Singer 911 - search up that thread.

I was in the same spot.. I started with a long hood and bought this for the the drivetrain.. but I sold the 72 and wound up rebuilding the 85...

By the way.... the front bumper it the above pics was just sitting on the shock mounts... I did clean up much better when installed all of the way... the rear took some working but I finally got rid of the sag in the middle

I love the look of the 964's. How do they clean up on a narrow bodied car. I wouldnt mind going that route, but i dont know how it would look completed. I dont mind the stock look, i think its beautiful, but since im taking it all apart, and paint will happen soon, im just thinking...

The singer 911 looks beautiful, but probably best on a long hood with wide flairs. not so much on mine

I got the bumpers off of a fellow ont his site... they are after market and look pretty good ont the car. took a little work but nothing bad.... I should have grabbed the rockers off him too but I snoozed and lost....

The original look it very nice too.... I am just partial to either the long hood or the newer sytle for some reason

what kind of paint job

do you scoot around metro ny or other city streets or do you live out in the woods of NJ

should it be just for nice drives or should it be a Belt Pky street machine

how long have you been driving a 911

do you have tools to doing anything that's not glued down

my take is that you can personalize a world class supercar and never become bored

Willy, how does that SWB 3.6 combo feel on those skinny tires? My 77/3.2 feels like it needs more than the 205's it has on the back right now. You must like going slideways.......heh, heh!

Expensive tires that give that little churp before sliding work good on a narrow body. A little oversteer/understeer suspension adj as per drivers style but that's it.

narrow body needs a 930/Carrera or = front spoiler w/a small tail and from 60 mph on it becomes a great ride....... assuming t-bars, shocks, and bushings are all +++

just my take on what works for me

I have the 911 for 2 years now. I only drove it one summer and love the car. I did a quick rebuild/refresh on the engine and just got it back in a couple of months ago. I still have to get the CIS in order. I dont really have the tools to take the whole car apart. I just want it to look nice, but it doesnt have to be show worthy. I am basically just looking for a beautiful ride. This is my first 911, but it wont be my last. I am getting my feet wet with this one, and one day will upgrade to a better one and really personalize it. Thats when I have more money.

I am in need of new tires. I will be running 6 and 7x16 fuchs. The 7's dont fit perfect under the rear, but i will make them sneak in there. lowereing the car is next on my list. Thanks for the suggestions, I just cant wait to take her for a real drive. Its been to long

I dont think it shouldn't be to bad. Most of the car is apart, or as apart as I am going to do. Getting my friend to come over and start preping is really the hard part

Install good used 21/27 T-bars. 22/28 T-bars are noticeably harder for no more street usable performance. They should cost around 1/2 of new. Stock bars are ok for a gentle car

Install new rubber T-bar bushings front and rear if possible. Original stock rubber bushings must be beat up and it'll destroy fun driving by making the car soppy.

open up steering box and regrease

confirm good ball joint, tie rods, and shocks

Learn how to DIY alignment, ride height, and rake. Great info in archives. The so called "Euro ride height" is perfect for street. Cost is $0

Install decent 6.5" front speakers in doors. Forget about rear deck speakers. Install 75x2 amp under a front seat. Confirm it'll fit before buying. 5.25" have lousy bass when loud. Great install info in archives.

install front and rear spoilers next year unless you have spare $

change tranny oil using Swepco, rebuild shifter, and rebuild or buy new shifter coupler to tranny.

you may need a front fender oil cooler or you'll be limited by high oil temps without one

I rolled fender lips using 7" Fuchs. A local pope shaves the lip edges successfully

above should buy you time and you'll be well entertained for cheap

have fun

Thanks Ronin, all great advice. I cant wait to get started. How did you roll the fenders. Mine have the chrome edging, which i will take off. Will a bat work? I figured roll the fenders, and make sure it all fits and is straight before paint
