What happens when your wife lets you drive xcountry
Well the day is finally here!
My wife, the soul she is, has cut me loose for a xcountry drive from Philadelphia to Southern Cali for the Targa California. The car, a 72 911t with lightwt mods and 2.4 converted in the 80's to a 2.7 is about to travel 8000miles in about 20 days. I leave tomorrow at around 6am for the adventure that awaits. My plan is to log in here with photos and an update on location, fuel, oil, misadventures and anything I find cool along the way. I'm neither a great photographer or writer but I'll try to due my best and keep it entertaining. Today the beast we shall call El Diablo for reasons I'd rather not mention, just got new tires. A set of Dunlop Z1 Star Specs. The last visit to my favorite shop and guys at Speciality Cars in Allentown prior to the trip. Enough of the background on the car. The plan... Tomorrow leaving Philadelphia heading south to North Carolina via Route 81 to visit my folks in Mocksville outside of Winston Salem. More to follow after a few photos. ![]() ![]() Ready to go... ![]() ![]() |

Thank for the encouragement!
Now I need to get packing. Tools check, spare belt, oil filter, extra rotor and cap, manual, electrical supplies, small parts including clutch cable ends, and extra fittings check. 8 quarts of extra brad penn check. I just finished a complete new brake system and repacked the cv joints over the winter so they should be good. Thanks to Grady for the info I learned from him in the forums. I've limited myself to 2 bags for the tools, oil and supplies. 1 bag for clothes and one for misc including the lab top and camera. ![]() ![]() |

I've done a few x-country in my 911
I always remove wheel caps and leave car as dirty as possible bring some Rain-X i borrow wife's cell and once I pulled battery for over a week. She had cell carriers going nuts trying to gps me. I just said i was deep in one forest after another. My attitude is it's not a racer per se. It's psychological warfare with the HP. Don't speed unless you have forward bait and a V-1 or you'll become coffee conversation. I'm loaded w/bs about doing these rides. lets see a pic of car packed up, and then your 911 in every pretty pic all the best, stay safe

Check into jumping onto the Blue Ridge Parkway as you leave Asheville. You will then be on some of the best Porsche cruising road in the US on your way to the Dragon. A significantly more scenic route versus Interstates 40/74 West with lots of moderate twists and low LEO presence. Traffic on a weekday should be very thin if not zero.

See ya there! You will need radar detector. Have you checked out speed cameras enroute? Arizona was famous for them, but may (or may not) have removed them. You can get along without all the oil. We do have P-cars in Calif, so the local oil is as good as what you have in the City of Brotherly Love.
If you list your route state by state, I'll bet a lot of 'helpers' will pop up, and this will become a very long thread.

That is one sweet ride. Good luck. You may want to have an iPod with ear buds for parts of the country.
