87 911 conversion to 964 oil tank

Ok gang, I really want to do this. I know the Matteo has done it with his 3.9 RSR machine, and that others have made this work. So please help me get the definitive explanation of how to make it happen, along with the parts to source. As way of background my engine is already a 964/993 derivative, and the trans is a G-50, body is a stock '87 Carrara.

Some of my questions are:

Is it a must to replace the passenger side inner fender area (in the engine compartment) with later sheetmetal?

How should the stock oil lines on the pre-964 cars be connected to the thermostat?

Can the stock oil level gauge in the 911 be used with the 964 sender?

Is there any interference issue with a torsion bar car and the tank?

What are _all_ the factory parts needed? Sure we need an oil tank, how about the dipstick, fill lines, oil level sender , etc. Seems like a salvage yard is the only viable choice based on cost of all these items as new.

Has anyone tried (lets really get out there on this one) using a muffler system that is akin to the 993 setup after doing this conversion on a narrow body car?

Tyson! Here is your chance to reveal all

Thanks folks!

I am curious... why do this? Slighty better weight distribution?

My race car with 3.8L engine still uses a conventional 91 tank. Mine has the JWE/SRP extenion and baffling. The car's builder put a later tank in his 3.8L TT race car, but I think he had to because of intake plumbing. On his set up, he had to remove the right rear quarter panel to check/add oil. But in his case that panel was attached with dzus fasteners.

Anyyway, I think I saw a few 964 cars at Partsheaven if you are looking for a tank.

Well yes, that is indeed part of it. But my car is still a full weight street car (even have the rear bumperettes), so if I was worried about weight alone there are a lot more places to do this!

My primary motivation is to keep a stock appearance, (while the RSR tail does not help there, h'mmm) and quiet the car down with a more serious muffler system. I would also like to stay "green" and run the 993 cat (I have 993 H/E) and twin mufflers ala the 993. I realize that I may not be able to run the stock 993 mufflers since I am a narrow bodied Carrara, so some other solution (custom) may be required.

Plus - it's cool.

Let's see. I'll try to answer some of your question.

1. No, you don't need to replace the inner fender section

2. You can't really use the 964 thermostat. At least I haven't worked it out yet. I'm currently running without one, since it is a track car. I plan to install a Mocal up front between the hardlines and cooler, or I may see if I can adapt the 964 t-stat to work with Elephant Racing early-style hardlines.

3. The stock gauge works perfectly with the 964 sender. just make sure you get the polarity correct on the two wires. It won't hurt anything if you get them backwards, but it will only read correctly one way.

4. No interference with torsion bars unless you try to run the t-stat as it is on the 964. I was even able to install the Wevo SPS kit without removing the tank.

5. Try to get the tank from a salvage yard complete with the dipstick tube a dipstick, and as many of the brather hoses as possible. Also the oil filter console.

6. The exhaust idea would be great on a 3.6 conversion running 993 exhaust. You could source some mufflers similar in arrangement to the 993 units, but more compact to fit in the smaller non-993 rear quarters.

The way I mounted the oil filter console was to make a template of the original oil tank opening and cut out a blanking plate of aluminum. Then i cut the hole for the oil filter console, and the breather lines to run through. For the dipstick, I simply bent the forward oil tank mounting hole so the dipstick tube could runthrough it at the proper angle, then strapped it to the inner wall like the 964/993 did.

I use the coupler in the engine-to-tank breather to fill the oil. I have a tube with a funnel attached that I insert in the hose. I just remove the airbox lid, undo one hose clamp, and pop in the fill tube. Saved me from a ot of fabrication. I plan to work out something that's a little easier in the future.

I was thinking about running a 964 tank and a 72 oil filter console that has the t-stat built into it?

I did this conversion on my turbo project and here was my method.

I converted the tank and fender to R style external filler neck, welded a neck on the tank and installed and standard dip stick.

I used a Mocal t-stat in the fender and stock 964 filter console where the normal 911 filter goes, in the enigne compartment.

I converted the tank and filter console to -16 AN fittings and made custom lines to hook everything up.

The connection to the cooler uses a stock 1972 oil feed pipe and slip on hoses, my quess was right and it bolted up perfectly.

The turbo return is plumbed to the upper port for the dip stick on the 964 application and has been converted to an AN -8 fitting as well.

Please note my motor is based on a 3.3 turbo w/ headers so I can't comment on the exhaust question.

It was alot of work but I wanted the larger forward mounted tank for weight and cooling benefits.

The car is currently apart for final paint & fabrication so I don't have any photos of it installed unfortunately.

Hope this helps a bit.

Reviving this thread (if possible) and looking for pictures! I have the tank, the engine is out of the car and I am looking for the 964 Oil console. But I still feel unclear on all the details.

964 Oil tank in 911

Here you have couple of pictures.
The 964 Oil thermostat works fine in a 911.

Is this correct routing??
oil pump innlet (suction) is from nr. 2. and in to the pass.side engine oil cooler (pre-89). The oil goes through the engine and returnes out the driver side crankcase. returnes through the oil filter and back to nr.3??
Nr. 1 is oil filler.
4, 5 and 6 are oil vent. I do not want oil vent into my intake. block all but one and and mount a brether filter??
