scissor lift question
finally going to be joining the club later this week and i have a question. the various owners manuals i have read all seem to say the same thing - that the engine should be in the rear of the lift. since we are reversed should i put the lift backwards in the garage? looking it over i would think that i would want the end with the two cylinders to be under the front of the car for increased access to the engine, right?

That's how I use mine - Hydraulics under the nose - I do try to keep the rear arms at 90 degrees to the lift though, and the car fairly forward on the lift - Seems fine.

I was going to make them, but wanted them in a hurry and was crazy busy at work - got a mate to make them in the end. They are great, but really take 2 people to move them around, as they weight about 150 pounds each - so I plan to make some mods to enable them to be moved more easily, as well as cutouts that will take corner balance scales that can be individually levelled - its just a question of available time.

got the lift delivered this evening but my phone camera cannot take a pic worth a damn when it's dark so pics will come tomorrow. i never really thought of 48" as being high until i saw the platform at it's max height. the only problem, if you want to call it that, is that there is a bar welded between the rails on the back of the lift. it looks like it may make dropping the engine impossible. luckily i already did that in the fall on a friend's 2 post and did what i needed to but for the future i may have to cut that bar out.

The problem I see with V12man's lift position are the hydraulics at the front of the car. Most of the weight with a Porsche is at the rear, so as the scissors style lift goes up the rear legs with the rollers get closer to the center of the car and all that weight at the rear makes the lift very tail heavy. Not all the scissor style lifts are the same, and V12man's looks well built, but just a word of caution.

Not so, the lift should have it's ctr marked, on mine the yellow sticker has the ctr pt marked by the circle w/ black quadrants. you want the center of mass of the car near that point on the lift. On a 911 the CoM is near the factory lift point(black plastic cover on the sill)
