Hopeless idiot here, please be gentle. What exhaust do I have on this 85 Carrera I just bought?

ok, please be gentle to me too. I don't think your muffler is stock. It rather look like a glasspack type, straight through muffler. If it is, of course it is lound.
Can't really see the cat but at the little corner, it doesn't look anything fancy. Everything else look stock but shiny.

HE's are stock, cat will most likely be stock too, muffler certainly is not!

Since the pictures were centered on the header section that's what I thought you were asking about.
the headers are the stock crossover design used from '75 - 94. but the muffler is an after-market glasspack of some sort. I'm sure it is much louder than stock. It looks as if the stock cat is in place but it is hard to tell, usually when the cat is removed the shield goes w/ it. The headers shown here are a poor design, but to replace them w/ a proper 3 into 1 will be expensive

Stock HE's, probably a Bursch sport muffler. If it loops back over and exits the stock opening it is a Bursch.
A friend and I did a back to back and it made solid HP gains over my stock muffler. We both had SW chips and cat bypass pipes. |

That makes sense. The car is louder than my 78SC but not offensively so. It does loop over and exit the stock opening.
