Hello to all!!
I'm looking for info on redoing my targa top. It's in half decent shape but has small tears where it folds. The inside material ( headliner?? ) sags a bit also. I'm not really interested in doing it myself unless someone tells me that it's not to big of a deal. I guess my question is who might be the best person to perform this job. Thanks in advance, Mark Betts 1985 carrera targa ![]() |

You can do it yourself. There are three Pelican Tech. Articles that you may want to review:

I just happened to find the most incredible craftsman to do just that to my top. He's in Boulder, Colorado, and has been doing nothing but Targa tops since like 1972. Great guy, name of Dave Brown, and I recommend him highly!!!!
TargaExpert@aol.com Tell him Jim directed him to you and ask what his work load is like. I gave him my top last week and don't plan on seeing it until mid January. If you're not in a hurry and want the job done right...he's the man. ![]() |

Mark--
check the threads, but as a Targa owner myself I've heard nothing but great things about dan @ carinc.com. he's in nj, and is supposed to be THE man with respect to targa tops. I don't have any personal experience, since mine is in good shape. http://www.carsinc-nj.com/ I actually posted a thread several months ago on how people store their tops. Mine sits off the car, unfolded on top of two old shoes (check your owners manual for why). I don't use mine as a daily driver, so unless its real cold, the top is off. good luck!

Check out Autos International <http://www.autosintl.com> in Escondido, CA (northern San Diego county) -- ask for Tony Garcia.
They recovered and adjusted my '83 Targa top (among numerous other interior restorations they've done) -- wonderful job, done in 3 days, I couldn't be happier. Cheers! C. |

Mark:
Typically this 'board comes through again. Warren is right on; you can do this yourself...email me offline if you have specific questions. I have done only four to date; one my own and three for friend. OTOH, you don't sound too eager to get to it, so I will counsel that it is a job that will require grunt work and have you cussing a bit. If you do go with Dan/Dave/AutoInt do make sure to have the f/r pins checked. Also, if any of these guys tells you that your 'plates need to be aligned or the inner burlap replaced then go for it as this is critical to the whole project. Of course, you could try to find one of the rare Carrera fiberglass factory tops. That'll set you back some bucks but then again you will never have to worry about those folded edges again! John

Webbing will rot with water
those small cracks can be a problem in the rainy season. I let my top go through a few seasons with minor leaks and this is hard on the internal webbing. Just a hint so you don't let things go from OK when dry to really bad/abused.
