Weber carb rebuilt question
Hello,
I am going to rebuilt my 40IDA Weber as a winter project and would like to know if you do glue the new gaskets to the carb or just put it on and tighten the nut? Also, what can I use to soak the carbs if I don't have a part cleaner sink?. thank you for all your help. Newbie ![]() |

no glue on the gaskets. i don't like smelling the carb cleaner in my shop, so i have a local carb rebuild shop clean them for me. pretty cheap. their cleaner is better than what you could buy at auto parts stores.

Rebuilding your webers will be relatively easy. Wayne's book has a nice section describing the process. YOu can find parts diagrams in the book or in the Pelican tech article section.
As far as the gaskets. I have never glued them. Just tighten snug from inside(middle of carb) to outside (ends of carb). The same as you would for any gasket/cover system. For cleaning, Go to the local discount store and purchace a large plastic container. These can be found in the storage bin area. Make sure to get one large enough and deep enough to submerge the entire carb. Also buy a gallon refill size of simple green. This works well as a makeshift parts cleaner. Submerge the carbs overnight(after disassembly) and then scrub with a wire brush(or toothbrush- not your wife's). remove carb and blow out ALL passageways with your air compressor. NO compressor? you can use canned carb cleaner. soak and clean all jets and hardware. blow clean as well. reassemble, install and readjust with Uni-Syn. your car should run great now. Hint: If you have never taken the carbs apart, count the number of turns on the idle and air correction jets before removing. This will get you started when its time to reassemble and adjust. Happy carb cleaning.
