Post My early 84 model was made in 83, some things too old

It was made in the Fall of 83, so I have the front oil cooler that looks like a cage...long tubes.

Is there any difference between this and the newer one, and the main question is, if I get a different oil cooler, is it a simple swap out, or should I just leave this one and add another? (although this might damage my engine I can foresee since it's not designed to have a bunch of external oil coolers and may not get properly lubricated while the oil surges all througout the system!).
Anyone who knows what I ought to do or who has done anything about this, let me know.

Sounds like you have the multi-tube SC heat sink cooler. Before you do anything, are you having cooling problems? If not why bother.
The Carrera unit w/fan seems to be the upgrade of choice. Jack has about a half dozen coolers and a half mile of braided line on his car so I guess the pumps can handle the volume.

On a hot day in traffic it gets up to the 3/4 mark...So probably! Anyone know what temp that is?
What is the very top red "Danger Danger" temperature?
(never been there)

you should start swetting if the oil temp gets up to the 2/3 mark. This is about 250 deg. F. One of the gurus correct me if I am wrong but the marks are about 50 degrees apart starting at 150 deg. at the bottom mark.

Not sure about equivalents for each mark on a Carrera. Someone help us out here. On mine, the lowest marker is 60 degrees, then 90 degrees, then 120 degrees, and then 180 degrees at the red mark. Of course, this is probably celsius, correct??? What are the equivalents?

Kurt, on my car in stop and go traffic when it's in the 90's outside with the air on my car will just about hit that same mark, too. Maybe we need a fan.

Interestingly enough, my owner's manual doesn't seem to imply panic if you go into the red. It simply says to 'slow down' if the temp gets that high. If, after 'slowing down', the temp doesn't move at all, then it says to take the car in.

Does an air-cooled car overheat in the exact same manner as a water-cooled car?

Well, you're right, my manual doesn't suggest panicking either. However, the manual is written assuming we'll get 120k miles on our cars, and every mile after that is icing on the cake. Since we want 200k if possible, we probably ought to cool it a bit if we can.

I'll see what I come up with, I just have to take the gauge apart. When I put the gauge faces on, I could see that there were temperature numbers (fahrenheit it looked like to me) on the edge of the original face. I just have to peel the face back and note what those are...I think ours are the same BTW.

Kurt,

You really ought to get one of the $80 gauge conversion kits with a new sender and face calibrated in degrees F. The tiny numbers on the left side of your gauge should be Centigrade.

At least on the SC...there are temp numbers over to the FAR left on the oild temp gauge.

Sometimes you have to look from the passenger side of the car. They are under the bezel.

Kurt,

It all depends where you live. If you live in the hot desset of Arizona where it's above 100 every day, then you're probably better off with an updated cooler to extend the life of your engine.

but if you're like me and live up in the northeast where the winters are long and cold and the summers are short and barely hot, then you're probably ok off with that "jail bar" type oil cooler....that's the one my 83sc also has and it's never gone past the halfway point on my gauge, even on a 90+ day

well, i looked into updating to the Carrera fan type cooler and it's about 1300 for the update. not worth it in my case.

Kurt-

The temp numbers I posted for my car for each marking should be identical to yours. I got the numbers by looking to the extreme left side of the marks. There they were, just as the cats up here had promised!!!

Man, $1300 is a lot of bread for that upgrade.

I am planning to upgrade to the Carrera unit w/fan as soon as I am done with the brakes and get the targa top sealed up. I also have considered downgradeing the oil temp gauge, but that will probably have to wait for a bit. What all is involved in the temp gauge downgrade?
