Removal of the fan belt
I used the tool to hold the fan in place and removed the nut, but now how do i take out the shims? they look like rectangles with rounded ends, just large enough to cover the bolt. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what you got there, but they sure aren't pulley shims. You should have 6 of these:

Hi Richard:
Welcome to the best 911 BBS on earth. How about a picture of your baby. You should also add your location to your profile. Sometimes a local fellow will be able to help you out if we know where you live. Anyway, about your question, the thing you are describing sounds like the key to hold the outer pulley half and looks like this: ![]() The shims go around this key. When installed, the ones that do not go between the halves, go outside the outer half and look like this: ![]() This picture shows how the parts are stacked. Note that there are 4 shims between the pully halves and 2 outside the outer pully half. Your distribution may be different. ![]() You need to have a total of 6 shims to ensure that the nut is positioned correctly.
