MIG weld door skin?
I am in the process of replacing the driver's side door skin on my '72. I've already got the old skin off and thinking about how to get the new skin on. It looks like epoxy adhesive on the lower and rear edges. However the front edge of the skin was originally spot welded on and the few threads that I can find on this all say spot weld. Only I don't have a spot welder and can't find one to rent in Mobile. Has anyone drilled holes and welded the skin on with a MIG welder? I don't immediately see why this wouldn't work. Opinions?

Yes you can drill and use a mig to make "rosette" welds that look very similar to spot welds. Try and weld from the bottom up.. i.e. start the arc on the underlying piece and weld up around the drilled or punched hole.

Caveat: I haven't done door skins on a 911.
Saying that, I have never welded skins on any of the cars I've done. Why is this needed on leading edge? Not like with todays glues, its going to shift....seeming like your adding difficulty and a place to trap moisture to what could be bonded?

Use seam sealer on the joint between the panels, before you crimp the flange over on the new door skin, then tack the skin in the corners.

My original door had a row of spot welds all the way up the leading edge. I also read a thread on the forum where KevinP73 also spot welded the leading edge of the skin to the frame. So I assumed that this was standard practice.
I am having second thoughts about the epoxy though as it looks expensive and probably requires that I buy a special applicator. Maybe seal sealer is the way to go.

I have used sealer myself for doors, though epoxy for quarters. The "older" products required a specific expensive gun, but my local Napa lends it out for use with purchase of the epoxy. There are some new application styles on the market today that doesn't require this type of applicator. After properly crimped, I don't see that your asking more than moisture control.
