84 Carrera Euro - Clutch problem help
Ok, like the post says 84, got it a couple of weeks ago 69k original miles, was previous owner's baby. The other day I was at the on-ramp to the expressway on 2nd gear goosed it. It accelerated fine, wasn't paying too much attention on speed or RPM. it felt like suddenly the clutch slipped or something and RPM went up. It happened again this morning. I backed off the accelerator pedal and shifted to 3rd both times didn't have any problem. I may try it again to see what speed and RPM that happens. Haven't really tried it in 3rd gear. Other than that, drives like a dream. Any ideas? How long does the clutch last. I don't imaging the old man really drove it really hard. I have all the maintenance papers from the previous owner, no clutch change so far. Just wanted to make sure if I should be cautious, look for symptoms and change it before it gets really bad.

Hi
|
yup, sounds like the clutch is slipping.
How long does a clutch last? depends. It's possible that the PO didn't race the car but maybe he "rode the clutch" at stop lights or intersections, thus reducing the life of the clutch. you may not feel it slip in 3rd gear, it requires a certain amount of torque for it to slip.

Same thing happened to me when my clutch started to go. If you put your foot into it at about 3000rpms (when torque is higher) it should slip more. When you back off - thus reducing torque - the pressure clutch would stop slipping.

I drive the car only weekends, maybe 100miles. How much time do I have for normal driving?

In any case, you ought to replace the "time bomb rubber center clutch" before it leaves you stranded on the road. I sounds as though the clutch is still original from new. By this time and the age of your car, unless the original clutch has been replaced with a "spring centered clutch plate" you are living on borrowed time, not to mention the clutch slipping problem!

I read about the center rubber in one of the threads, I certainly would like to replace anything else while I'm in there. Let me know if you have any recommendations. Also, anything specific I should look for. You guys have recommendations on what brand clutch I should get?

Thanks Uwanna!!!
I skimmed thru the instructions in this forum for clutch replacement. Anybody, how difficult is the job? It talks about engine drop. How high do I need to jack the car to get clear working space on the clutch. i'm sure this topic must be beaten to death. I'll search on it tonight. I used to be an aircraft engineer and also have a friend to help me. What do you guys think about the clutch kit by pelican PN: PEL-SK-2N
