Help! Installed SW chip, car won't start
Hi all,
I just acquired an SW chip from a fellow Pelicanite. Problem is, the car won't start with it installed. I followed all of the instructions, and am pretty sure it's the right chip for my car (24 pin, made for '84-'86 carreras). Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I emailed Steve Wong last night, but haven't heard back from him yet. I put the original chip back, and the car started up fine. What I did - 1. Remove DME unit 2. Opened unit 3. Resoldered jumper as instructed here - 911Chips.com - Motronic DME Update. Mine had the jumper connecting B702 to B1, so I moved that to connect B703 and B704. 4. Removed old chip 5. Installed SW chip 6. Closed unit 7. Reinstalled unit into car Did I miss anything? I saw instructions for adjusting the idle speed, but that seems to only apply if/when the car can be started. Thanks!

Are you sure the chip is installed in the right direction? With the little notch on the correct end?

Thanks - I was able to get in touch with Steve, and hopefully I can figure out what's going on.
Wavey - I was sure, until everyone started asking me! I'll try it again tonight though.

Check the jumper you soldered in.
I had the same problem, and it turned out that I had messed up one of the solder joints. I went back and cleaned up my soldering job and the car started right up.

Your jumper appears to be soldered in correctly.
You burnt off a solder pad from the jumper you removed, so if you try to put the old chip and jumper back in, you might have to be creative. This should not affect what you're trying to do with the SW chip. Oh, and your chip appers to be correctly oriented. Make sure you didn't bend one of the pins while installing it.

Here's my chip story:
Bought a GIAC for the 3.6 conversion. Bent a couple of pins on installation. Broke a couple of pins trying to straighten them out. GIAC graciously sent me another for the cost of shipping..... Broke a couple of pins installing that one......won't be installing another.... I am an idiot...... ![]()

I just installed a SW chip a few weeks ago in my 84 cab. Had no issues fortunately and the car screams!! Steve and I had numerous e-mails and his customer service is second to none. He will get you squared away, give him time to get back to you...he will.

Is the ICV vibrating when the ignition is switched to ON? If yes it tells you the CPU is processing the chip contents correctly. If not the CPU is not running because it doesn't read the chip contents correctly.

Matt, It could be a shorted chip due to electro-static, I have a SW chip temporary not installed in my car, your welcome to try it.
