Thumbs up SSI's verses catbypass systems

I am trying to decide between getting SSI's & a new muffler for my 85 or try a bypass & new muffler. I know the SSI's route will cost more, but Fabspeed recommends their bypass, muffler, chip, airbox combo which will be cheaper & they say will get the same or more HP on the Dyno. Has anyone tryed this Fabspeed combo? Any & all thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Go with SSI, sport muffler and chip tuned to the SSIs. This will make a noticeable power improvement and is a tested and proven combination. I have it on my '86 and I am very pleased.

You will find supporters and detractors of the bypass pipe. Even the bypass pipe supporters will agree the SSI makes more power. The airbox will do nothing for your performance.

Bruce Anderson's book supports the above statements with dyno testing results.

Clark-

Did you go with a dual in, single out? How is the "sound"? Which muffler did you go with? And, if you don't mind me asking what was the total installed price?

Thanks for the info on the airbox, I've heard misc stories on many bogus claims!

I went with a dual in/single out Bursch. Bursch gets no respect because it doesn't cost $800, but I really like the sound and it is low back pressure. A little louder than stock, but the note is very different, more high pitched especially at high rpm.

I got my SSIs used for $550, bursch around $225, gaskets and such another $75. You may need a new oil line for $150 (I didn't need this), and you will have to fabricate some ducting to connect the heat. I used the the slinky wound wire and fabric hoses from the '70s style heater blower.

I did the install myself, so all in I got off for about $900. You will see SSI used on ebay from time to time.

SSI's are not practical if your car requires a smog test that has to show a functional cat.
