Sportomatic Towing Help
I am planning on towing my 1976 Porsche 911S Sportomatic about 700 miles and wondered if I needed to do anything to keep from ruining the torque converter or transmission.
Thanks, Dean |

Dean,
When a Sportomatic is in neutral, it is the same as a 4/5-speed in neutral being flat-tow’d. There is no issue with the torque converter. That said, make sure that the parking brake and service brakes are completely free with NO drag. If the car is driven regularly, there usually no problem. If it has been setting, there is the risk of something dragging or not totally free. Pay attention to alignment, transmission lubricant, CV joints, axle bolts, wheel bearings and tires. Be sure that the front suspension A-arm mounting structure is strong enough (no rust) to take flat-towing. The stresses are greater than normal driving. This is just like a 700-mile drive – without you at the wheel to tell if something is amiss. Best, Grady
