Ruby is finally done....
No, really-she is. I've not posted a new thread on Ruby in some time. She's had a number of years of TLC by me. Some of the notable improvements:
1. A bit of lightening, rollbar, 5 pts, a Recaro racing shell for me, a Recaro SRD for the passenger. 2. A full and pretty nice repaint in 12/02. 3. Many sets of wheels until I finally landed on a set of Jeff Alton's 17" Fuchs repros. She's been running on R compound tires full time for about 3 years now, currently Yoko AO48R's, 255/225's. 4. 993 4 piston caliper all around with a 23mm MC and 309mm X 32mm rotors up front. 5. 22/29 T-bars, Elephant poly-bronze bushings and monoball all around, turbo tie-rods, raised and decambered spindles, custom valved Bilsteins. 6. B&B headers with a Flowmaster muffler. 7. A rebuild due to me mis-shifting into 2nd instead of 4th at the track in 2007. She also got a Seine Systems shift kit to avoid a repeat of this mistake. 8. Most recently, I tore her down to the case and put a set of 10.5:1 98mm Mahles in, my second Steve Wong chip, finished twin-plugging her and refreshed the build covered on this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/520499-rubys-engine-rebuild-rev1.html Today was the big day, and she came back to life. She fired right up and sounds pretty sweet. The only obstacle is a leaky cam oil line, which I just ordered a replacement for from our host. Here the video of the third twist of the key this morning and a few pics. I guess the real test is this week when I get the new line in and get her on the road, but all else looks right with the motor: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1274563034.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1274563048.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1274563063.jpg The leaky culprit. If I have to have only one issue with a new motor, I'll take the $33 bolt-on cam line: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1274563086.jpg OK, so maybe she gets some lighter bumpers and some new paint on the hood next year. Maybe some dyno time with Steve W. Maybe a set of new 1/2 shafts for the rear too. Aw heck, I could replace the old windshield and cover the dash in Alcantara, and then..................;) |
still my favorite targa on this board. amazing.
glad ruby is Californian now. hahahha. |
She is alive...
Looking good.

Some pics of her on the ground....last year at the Monterey Historics and the Pelican Winery Run we made. She got to be front and center on the lawn:

Glad to hear everything went well with Ruby's surgery! I can't wait to hear this engine going down the freeway!

Ed, that's pretty bad ass. Same year as mine.
|
Congrats, Ed. Great car.
|
I'm not a Targa fan but yours is the exception.
There is something about it that "works" for me. Very nice, Ed!!! |
I was following in the background. Sounds wild! Can't wait to hear more specially when she's broken in.... thanks.
|
Thanks guys, she's really a fun car. I finally will be able to get back to having fun.
|
great work
|
Way to go Ed! Double check those CV's! Great build.
|
Ed,
The engine sounds strong. Your Targe looks right, sounds right....nice build sheet. X-factor to spare! Regards, al |
Ed
Outstanding build. Looking at your engine build thread, I didn't see this mentioned. How are you going to placate the smog police with a twin plugged motor? It is hard to hide that second set of wired during the visual. Thanks Jack |
ed,
Beautiful targa, sets the bar for the rest of us. How did you get the bar back to SS? Did she come like that? I plan to do the right-side Cam Oil Line on my '89 this weekend, I will need to remove a/c compressor first. Seems like a straight forward enough job for a rookie. Would you be willing to to post the correct part numbers from our host, especially any of those metal washers? My parents used to live in San Marcos, I would love to drive (if I remember right), 78 to Oceanside. Anyway great car! Always like to read your posts and comments. Thanks. cloud. |
The Targa bar and bright trim were special ordered and it was a paint to sample. I call her Ruby as it looks darn close to the Ruby Red offered in 1964. I appreciate all of the comments!

Well, maybe I lied the other day, because she really is done now. I popped the new oil line in, and ran her around for about 20 minutes to seat the rings, now the oil is draining.
Very strong, and linear torque according to my butt-she seems to pull very nicely from low RPM's. So, now to get some miles on her, and then some dyno time so Steve W can dial her in. A quick stop on her first drive in 3 months. Taken on my phone, so it's low res, but she looks pretty good considering she's not bathed since February: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1274923620.jpg The last test run on the lift: Getting ready to head back to the barn: |
Looks and sounds good, Ed. I've gotta get some 17s....
|
Love the sound and looking good!
|
I really really like the lift in your garage!! I don't have a lot over overhead room but I'd love to be able to pick a whole car up like you have just to do stuff. Source?? Thanks!
|
Thanks-It's a Bendpak mid-rise lift.
