'68 two piece dash pad / dash cap

The dash pad on my '68 (with the original two-piece dash) has two ugly cracks that I need to hide. I want to keep the basic look of the original pad -- I just want it to look good.

I've been searching the archives to see what others have done and it seems like recovering by an upholstery shop (local or an online shop like Classic 9 Leather Shop Porsche Interior Restoration Automobile Reupholstery Craftsman) or having it rebuilt by justdashes.com are two good but slow and expensive options.

It seems like many people are happy with the dash caps. I'd like to give them a try but unfortunately the caps all seem to be for the later one-piece dash units.

Has anyone tried one of the 69-85 caps on a two piece dash car, or could guess how it would work? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
mike.
