$800 to Replace Windshield???????

I just got an estimate to replace the windshield in my '78SC, using the updated, "trimless" gasket and windshield used in the '89-'94 model year Carrera. Does almost $800 sound right?

During a windshield replacement last summer, I got the impression that OE German glass for the earlier models (no antenna in the glass) is getting hard to find. So, the later model glass (with internal antenna) will be the only OE glass available. I was told those units are around $600 apiece.

On the other hand, even if this is true, aftermarket glass is still available without the internal antenna, I am sure, and at a much more reasonable price. This means that you can probably get the job done for $300 or less, if you're not finickly about where the glass was made. FWIW, I also suspect that the aftermarket glass is as good or better than the spendy German stuff.

And finally, if you have full coverage insurance then the 'glass deductible' is probably all you need to pay either way.

Sounds OK if you are using a Porsche dealer or officialized glass repair shop.
Aftermarket prices are less than 50% for the glass, but then you have to install it yourself.
But my only comparison is EURO-land.

Is that with internal antenna? We just did aftermarket glass with no antenna in the turbo.

I got premium Sigla glass, with antenna and top tint, installed with the standard gasket and trim last year for free. I understand it cost the insurance company on the order of $400.

I had my windshield replaced last year. The price was around $400 including installation. I have the antenna and the glass was OE.
The price sounds high to me unless the glass w/o the antenna is hard to come by. I would live with the antenna in the glass if there was that much price difference.

I have been pricing glass with antenna and tint here in Ohio and the cheapest I can find is $500 for glass only no rubber no install>
Where the HECK did you all find these cheap prices???

In Houston, Binswanger Glass quoted me $460 total (includes tax, etc.) for my 92 C2 coupe. This is for an aftermarket windshield with the internal antenna. I don't think the aftermarket glass could be much worse than the OEM. My original windshield is pitted, chips easily, and the chips spread very quickly. I wouldn't recommend paying extra for the OEM glass, at least based on my experience.

I'm no expert, but there is a growing body of information that suggests to me that the German glass is softer. I believe this is the case, and that 'aftermarket' glass may be superior. Last summer I was finicky, so Sigla glass went in, green with green tint strip, just like OE. Well, it's cracked now, and my mistress will never be a concours car (for at least a couple of reasons), so I'm about to let them use aftermarket glass (also green with green tint strip).

Safelite seems to be a good bet for this job, which is the shop that does the dealership's jobs in Tacoma.

If you are in Florida, as I seem to recall, your insurance company should replace the windshield at zero deductible (no cost to you); even a tiny chip or crack in your line of sight is enough to trigger that particular law. Or at least, that was the case a couple years back.
