front strut ~shock question
I am in the process of lowering a 76' 912 and needed to remove the original metal spacers to allow further lowering range of the front...anyway, when I removed the nut in the front trunk that holds the top of the strut/shock, the piston proceeded to go down and into the strut/shock...
huuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm I said to myself...so I pulled the shaft back out and let go and back in it went...there is some resistance if I push & pull on the shaft, HOWEVER, this means these are toast as this shaft should always want to come up, even if it creaps up when you let go of it right...?? What Milt said. Not all shocks were gas charged. The standard Koni's and the standard Boges were hydraulic.
The Bilsteins, the Boge Turgo-Gas and the Koni Sports are all gas pressurized.

thx guys for the replies...
I investigated further...the struts are boge...as far as the inserts go, I did not check... funny thing is that the passenger side when I removed the washer, the piston stayed where ever I positioned it...my guess is these are original to the car...1976 912E... If I replace the fronts w/ Bilstein sports, should I replace the rear shocks as well...they too look original or very old but they have a 1/4" wide decal anound the bottom of the shock and look to originally have been a lt blue color... My next question is how do I lower the rear of this car...I will post pics here & if you suggest, I will post a seperate thread as these rear torsion plates do not have the 2 bolts at the front of the plate near the torsion tube which are the ones to change ride height... Thx for any and all input here... Bob

here is what I am working with...how do I adjust/lower this rear suspension...?? re index the torsion bars...??

Looks like you have some rebuilding work to do on your suspension. That surface rust might mean more damage inside torsion tube. I'd rebuild calipers too.

Milt & Tyson...how then do I determine if the boge ( I removed one front shock & it was black colored) if they are still functioning or are toast...?? Thx, Bob

did not see any of that on the front shocks...maybe I need to completly remove them to see any possible such markings...??
