1971 Restoration Porn II. Ultimate hidden stereo.

Hi Again. If you don't know the story behind my '71 911 restoration you can visit the main post here.

I set out to add a fantastic stereo to my restoration. I just didn't want to see it. So here is what I did.

The main component of the system is the Parrott mki9100 bluetooth/audio control. It gives you full control of your phone over bluetooth as well as ipod, usb, and line inputs. It also has a pass through for the factory radio. There is a very small screen and a small bluetooth controller and that's all you see. I wired it so the factory radio is still fully functional. If you don't know the system isn't there, you would never notice it. The old Blaupunkt works great (and sounds great surprisingly). The system is wired into a 600 watt JL HD 4 channel amp driving 2 JL XR 6.5" separates in the doors and a custom JL 8W7 8" sub box in the trunk. You get full control over all audio and telephone functions via the Parrott controller. The sound is fantastic, smooth and clean with plenty of bass. It's not a thumper by any means, just clean powerful sound. Mind you I upgraded the alternator when I rebuilt the car to handle all this and it cranks with no dimming headlamps.

Here are the parts:

Parrott mki9100 bluetooth controller. This thing controlls everything but the radio. When you turn the system on by turning the original radio on, the power antenna lead boots everything from a relay. Unless you do select something else, the original radio is fully functional. Once you select a different source, the bluetooth controller controls everything. There is a mic for the telephone hidden behind the headliner.

The Parrot display is small, I had to have my tach rebuilt so I had the guys at North Hollywood Speedo integrate the display into the tach.

The sub box and amps are located in the trunk. I laid up the sub box from fiberglass in the tire well (no spare... I have AAA and a repair kit) and the amps and crossovers are mounted on the ventilation cover. Plenty of bass makes it into the cabin. I left the speaker out of the dash and you can feel the air moving through the grill.

Here are some more views of the control screens:

I like it, despite the opinion of some hard core you don't need no stinkin' radio types. Impressive. It's there, but it doesn't look like it - very low profile. Now I know what the little screen in your tach was for...

I agree, I like great music, it has always gone along with driving for me. There is nothing better than listening to your favorite tunes in a great car. I know many will object, but it's not their car...

Do you have any pictures of the display out of the box before it was installed in the tach? I am looking for such a display for my EFI project.

Great integration!

Edit: Thanks, but I found the information. I see they disassembled the display unit to mount in the tach. Dimension of the OLED display is about 66 x 20mm.

You can see the display on the Parrott website. It is specific to this box though. I'm assuming you want to integrate an air fuel meter... Call Kevin at NH speedometer, they have done several AF meter integrations and can steer you in the right direction. There are a couple of examples posted here.

wonderful job. I admire the thought and craftsmanship.

I have debated some kind of intallation in my 1973, but I keep thinking I don't want anything to drown out the mechanical sounds. I have done many high end installations, but I just think of all the weight it will add to my 2250 lb car........

only concession I have made is a Unitden BCT 10 police alert scanner.......It has saved my butt so many times. I sounds an alarm when there is a Police mobile unit in the area.

It fits perfectly in the old radio slot.

I never really understood why people worried about not hearing the mechanical sounds...that's what volume is for! trust me i drive with it turned off a lot, i just love to have it when i want it.

needless to say weight reduction was not my objective, but with the removal of the steel spare the gain is negligible.

This just rocks. Call me impressed.

I'm actually in the process of yanking OUT the amp and CD changer that the PO put in my car.

I'm in love! As a car stereo and Porsche gee, I thought I'd be the only one with this level of insanity. Thanks for blazing a trail and AWESOME work.

Very slick install.

Once the Parrot system is being used does it then become the volume control for the whole system?
