I've been chided to the point I will yield and post some pictures of my new to me 1987 Carrera Targa. It has 127 K miles on it and was in decent shape 40 corrective items ago when I got it last September. I am the 4th owner and it has lived in NJ it's entire life.
I've done a repaint of the whale tail grill because it was worn thin to primer and also the Targa bar which was badly chipped. Masking the tail was a challange but it came out pretty good IMHO. My current projects are getting the cruise control going for which I've sent the controller back for another look-see since the first time seems to have failed. The second project is the air conditioning and I have a complete RennAire System II on order through our forum host and benefactor. Other than things I can ignore, this has become a near daily driver for short errands since I'm retired but it does get to stretch itself a couple times weekly as I increase the carbon footprint. Anyway, here are some pictures. Thanks for looking and thanks for all the great information from such wonderful people. Best regards, Roger ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Very nice.
Best of luck with it. One suggestion...don't count up your "corrective items" Or at least don't let your wife see them ![]()

Thanks Pete! I'm lucky to have a wife who encourages me to do what I want with the car and most everything else. With this one, I pledged to leave my OCD in the past and learn to live with things as they are. I do waffle at times paying attention to where I park it because "I need the exercise".

Roger:
First and foremost, "Welcome to the Pelican flock!" You did a great job with getting your Targa bar looking like a new one, as well as the tail. How long did it take you? Looks like you have a very nice purchase there. Enjoy the ride and good luck with your projects. ![]()

Wow, your car looks great. I have just acquired an '82 Targa and would be very interested in learning precisely what you did to refinish the Targa bar. It looks really nice. I'd love for the one on my car to look that good.

Thanks for all your kind comments and I feel very welcome to Pelican.
First, it was not me on Rt 17 with a blown tire. These Toyo tires are new and hopefully will resist all that 17 can deliver! As to the Targa bar and grill, I wet sanded the bar with 220 grit paper to feather the badly chipped areas. In my case the Targa emblems seem to be bolted on and I just didn't want to go through the level of work required to remove the bar. I have used a liquid mask found in hobby shops successfully refinishing some radio panels. I used that to "paint" over Targa and then primed with Rustoleum primer. The finish coats are Krylon satin black, yep the same stuff at the hardware store. I applied two coats to both the bar and the grill spaced about 15 minutes apart. One often learns a few things and today I was thinking if had to do it again, I would consider removing the emblems even if I broke them off and replace them with some sort of fastener or double stick adhesive. All things considered it looks so much better than it did so I'm happy. This is the before picture as I saw it for sale. The bra will never be used and is available really cheap! ![]() |
