Hot and I dont get it.

My 76 is running pretty hot and it happens pretty quickly.. I was just about to drive to the beach but now Im gonna have to park it.

I spent a few hours yesterday looking thru posts and decided I was running too much ignition advance as I was seeing 35 at 5-6k... so I brought it down to 30 and no change.. then I disconnect my vacuum retard and set it per the label on the engine to 5 atdc.. which gave me about 25 at 5-6k.. still running 240F with an ambient temp of 90 today.. this was no issue when it was cooler of course but now that its hot.. its not driveable.. I used and IR thermostat on the temp sensor it concurs with the gauge in the car..

Im running backdated heat exchanges and my heat is disconnect and capped.. 11 blade fan.. this thing should be running cool.

Trombone is so hot I cant touch it... car should be cool...

I will say this, at high rpms im seeing a 5 degree "shake".. so looks like my distributor has seen better days.. but still..

Also, the marks do not make sense to me.. my label shows Z1 on the right and an arrow to the mark to the left of that.. and says 5 ATDC.. Ok that makes zero sense.. the engine runs clockwise so Z1 would be advance of the mark to the left correct?

Yeah I could go buy a cooler and band aid this but something tells me this california car should be running cool with the mods done to it..

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That used to confuse me to.

ATDC. . .AFTER Top Dead Center (retarded)

BTDC. . .BEFORE Top Dead Center (Advanced)

I used to think (A)head and (B)ehind. .

Sorry that I can't help on your heat. . .do you have an external?? I'd suspect thermostats for the coolers if all is mechanically well with the engine.

Ahh. . .you don't have external. . .still it shouldn't be running that hot that fast. My 2.7 doesn't even begin to get close to 180 even on a 90+ day here in Denver until at least an hour of hwy (45 mins in traffic) and I don't have an external (yet) either.

I would recommend that you start a piggy bank for that. Unfortunately my wife is friends with my pig right now.

TOO FUNNY.. yes thats it! ATDC.. I just assumed... thanks for clearing that up! I thought I was going nuts.

Yeah I have the trombone and its damn hot.. so the thermostat is working.. I did not check CO but I adjusted it till it hunted at idle and than backed it off a 1/8 turn and it didnt hunt anymore.. so I doubt its very lean.. but I suppose it could be.. maybe I'll bring it in and have that set since I haven't a CO sniffer.

other than that Im at a loss.

By the way, with the retard line disconnected and set to 5 ATDC I have lost all tire spinning ability in 1st..

TURHUR. . . .yeah, you did say trombone. . . I'm not too fast today.

Something is definitely up. I haven't got a flow chart in front of me, but I think that front mount still works even if the thermo to the internal doesn't (You'd think they would design thermostats for auto purposes both water and oil to fail open, wouldn't you.) So it still may be an internal thermo.

Wish I could be of more help.

reattach your heater hoses so they blow cooler air through the exchangers. otherwise, you have a pair of ovens under the engine. every little bit helps. an SC crank pulley, about 135mm wide and a small fan hub helps a lot.

its a little too hot.

Changing out the trombone with a radiator type cooler would be better...
And I agree uncap those heaters...they help sheild the car from some of that exhaust heat.

Yup. . .I wouldn't like it

BTW JP. . .I must have skipped over the part about having the heat system disconnected too. Definitely hook that back up. It was constantly flowing through the exhaust (devoid of whether or not it was being dumped in the cabin) for a reason. I've personally found that I'll see 20 degrees more on the average in my car if this aren't hooked up.

This made a huge difference on mine. Had outlets capped after my rebuild b/c I didn't have the proper fan outlets.

I also found that a couple of my injectors were dripping and not spraying. Made a couple cylinders lean.
