Slantnose

What was the reasoning behind the slantnose? I've searched it's history a bit. Anyone know?

Seems it was patterned after the 935? (maybe)?

Less wind resistance? Faster? Advantage in racing?

It was a factory 'special wishes' option, I've heard, and very, very expensive.

Certainly a LOT LESS attractive. Ruins the lines of a classic style (IMO). Even worse on the cabrio, but I've only seen pics of a cabrio slant...

UGLY.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it's somewhat unique, but...

Opinions?

Slantnose street cars were meant to be styled after the 935. The 935 took advantage of a loophole in Group 5 racing regulations. The rules stated that fender flares (a.k.a. "wings") could be altered, ostensibly to fit wider track and wider wheels of racecars. However, Porsche (Norbert Singer) creatively interpreted the rules to not only allow wider flares to fit wider tires/track, but also to eliminate the fixed headlight buckets in the front fenders and allow for the slopenose, which was much more aerodynamic than the standard 911 front profile with which we're all familiar. 16 inch front wheels would fit under this re-profiled front clip, and they were deemed all that was necessary for the car.

The look may be a bit dated, but I like how there's a true racing reason behind this cosmetic (at least in street cars) issue.

I know they are kind of an acquired taste but I always give them a second look. I don't know if I would ever buy one but I think they definitely have something quite special about them. Then again I am a child of the eighties.

The rulebook stated that the "silhouette" of the car (hence the often named cars) was to be the same as the series car, *following a line along the center of the car*. That is why the headlights disappeared, since the line remained the same as the one in the center of the car.
