964 exploded distributor

well, here's a new one on me. 1991 C2 distributor advance weights broke up and jammed the upper part of the distrubutor, broke the shaft, sheared the pin in the drive gear and...........broke a chunk off the brass drive gear on the crank. gonna be expensive! has this happened to anyone else? i imagine there was some noise going on for a while before it blew.

Ouch...! What would be the preventive maintenance to make sure that this would not happen? Could this happen with a stock '83 SC?

Thanks,
mlfox

listen to your car 'cause it's telling you something. a drop of oil on the felt pad under the rotor at services. hard to say after the fact. maybe just broke without warning. i suppose it could happen to an SC as well. i hope it's not something new that's going to start happening more as the cars age.

Thats a new one for me, John,.......
