Rear Speaker Deck Questions
The spec's call for 4x6 speakers to fit the rear of my 1989 Targa via Porsche and Onlinestereo, although Crunchfield shows every model 4x6 speaker as not compatible with the vehicle. It list 5 1/4 speakers as a fit for the vehicle.
I replaced the front speakers last fall and want to upgrade the original speakers in the rear. What size do I need without having to make adjustments to the original settings? |

pretty sure they were 4x6 but you may be able to fit some shallow mount 6x9 as well, but that would require a little bit bigger opening in the trim piece.

I have JL Audio 6.5 inchers in mine. Your targa rear deck may not be tall enough, though? On the other hand, if you have upgraded your fronts, you may not actually need the rears. I didn't miss mine after I did the fronts, but I replaced the rears too, as the existing after market grills were UGLY.

if you want 6X9's you can buy an after market rear speaker. member Tysebold makes them for the coupe, but not sure if they will fit a targa.
best, Paul.

my rear deck speakers were installed by a PO many years ago. not sure what size right now but they are external units...small speaker boxes that are screwed to the deck... looks very 1980's but i like it. i suspect it is because there is no room for the speaker below the deck. i upgraded my speakers inside the speaker boxes a few years ago. not sure if they even make external speakers anymore

I replaced the four speakers in my 89 Coupe a few weeks ago.The fronts are 5 1/4 and the rears are 4x6.
Picked up some matching JBL's at Best Buy and they sound great ! Fit perfectly in the original enclosures ... Cheers ! Phil

I have Alpine 6x9 type R on the rear shelf of my 84 Targa, I just had to use 1" speaker spacers to raise them up a bit. They look fine and sound great. I have Focal 5 1/4" in the doors and it is plenty loud even on the highway with the targa top off. I tried to fit 6 1/2's in the door but good 5 1/4's fit better and the performance is very close to the 6 1/2's.

I was able to mount 6x9 Infinity reference speakers on the deck of my '87. They sound great, but the mounting isn't flush so the speakers are exposed. They have nice looking synthetic cones, so it's not terrible, but you lose the original look with modern speakers in the rear glass.
I also needed to cut the plastic that supports the cone (not much, just a small cut) to fit through the metal oval that the speaker mounts to.

there really is no need for rear speakers. when you go to a concert do they put the speaker cabinets behind you?

I installed the 4X6 Blaupunkt THX 462 in the rear. They fit without modifying the deck and are the correct depth. The grill was plain black when I bought it but it appears they are flashy now (maybe they still have some older ones). For $40 you can't go wrong and they look stock. I spent more on the door speakers (Hertz) and the rears certainly balance and fill out the sound.
I got the Blaupunkts here Blaupunkt THx462

i agree with nineball to a point, although his system(and mine i have 8's) both have rear seat delete with speakers for the low thump at the back, I run a JBL 720 watt amp I dont recall what 9's running, if you do run rears all they are is fill or a little bump .................

,..don't see many speakers on the sides of you at shows, either.

i run 8" subs in the back as well but low frequencies, like a sub, are non-directional. basically you don't have to point them directly at the listener.
the door speakers are really not on your side but rather still in front of you. you have to work with what is available, and that is limited in any car. i used mounting cups that angle the tweets to the driver's position.
