I suspect FG or CF makes no difference if polyester is being used. It's the polyester that is shrinking causing issues.

Yes, our sterling marketing people are calling everything 'carbon fiber' but what I was referring to is actual Autoclaved CF pieces of aerospace quality. In the aftermarket, this is known as "dry carbon fiber" and is a whole world away from the stuff often marketed to the... ah, er "JDM" boys.

What do you mean by "wrong"??? There is no "wrong" on these cars. Very few backdates are in an attempt to clone of copy something specifically. Most are simply hot rods or drivable tributes to the cars they love. Once you start worrying about it being EXACTLY like something its not, or worse, try to fool somebody....then it's just a fake.

It's bang for buck. You can do a basic backdate without painting cowl, roof, doors, quarters or engine lid.

Add the mirrors, and with a lot of cars, you're filling extra mirror holes and repainting the doors.

Add going to bright trim, and it's easily +4 figures.

The biggest visual impact is with fenders/hood and bumpers. There's a diminishing return past that point.

I "backdated" an '85 Carrera a couple years back for under $5000. Had I done mirrors and trim, I'd have been happier with the result, but not $3000 happier.

Thanks!

I'll be the first to admit the mirrors were wrong, but then fixing them, I'd want to go to bright trim, chrome door handles, swap the plastic engine grille for the metal one, etc., etc. (and some will argue I should have gone to 15" Fuchs instead of 16").

It is, as they say, a slippery slope.

One of the best I've ever seen was a 964 done very convincingly as a long hood. You do NOT want to know what that cost!

God save me from the Concour Weenie crowd. I have my own style and just drive.....I have a mismatched fender, electric windows and mirrors.....single exhaust as it runs better with back pressure.

Run what ya like....

I'm sorry, the thread wasnt called "show us your "run what ya like" cars, it was called "Show us your backdate", so I'm merely pointing out the "minor" things I noticed that kept a few cars from looking like an authentic early model, in order to stay consistant with the theme of this thread. It would be like someone updating a mid year to a 993 while keeping the flag mirrors Fuchs and old style reflector. The cars in this thread all look awesome and I was just pointing out an observation, but Craig made a valid point on the cost. (whose car looks fantastic BTW) SmileWavy

Just a reminder: not all us Weenies are Concours Weenies!

Well it was a "Backdate" thread, not a, show your custom "run what ya like thread" So I was just trying to stay true to what the OP was looking for. :p
Maybe a new thread would be in order..."Show your custom 911"
