Ever since I've owned my '80 SC (three months) it has an odd tendency to "buck" from the rear end when turning sharply at slow speeds (parking lot type speeds). It feels similar to a 4wd with it's hubs locked in. In addition, there's a sort of "grinding" noise from the rear when this happens. The car has a limited slip diff. Any ideas?
Thanks Matt 80SC |

A factory limited slip can be set at a number of different locking rates. I think it's 40%, 60% or 80%. It could be that yours is set at 60 or 80, which really doesn't make sense if you're primarily driving your car on the street.
Someone here might have a way to determine which setting yours is at without having to open anything up. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist home page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 06-27-2001).] |

Just a guess, but it could be a really, really bad CV joint. Never have seen this kind of behaviour in a rear wheel drive car, but it's not unusual in front-drive with bad CV's.

I just got my bmw 740 back today. I had the differential changed from a 2.93 to a 3.73. The mechanic that did the rebuild added limited slip. The problem you describe sounds like what my mechanic describes if the incorrect gear oil is used. The only way he will warranty his work for three years is if I use Red Line with limited slip additive. He swears by it and says it removes the chatter that can come from high lockups. He set my lockup at 50%. He stated I should read the bottle carefully; the Red Line comes with and without the limited slip additive. Although you can purchase the limited slip additive separately, you might as well buy the Red Line with the additive already in. This may be a somewhat inexpensive fix you can try.
One caveat, check with your mechanic and make sure this can be used in a Porsche transmission or whether just the limited slip additive can be used. I'd hate to see either cause more harm than good. [This message has been edited by autobonrun (edited 06-27-2001).] |
