Mirror Glass?

I need to replace my passenger side mirror glass on my '86 Carrera. Mine broke - years of bad luck! It seems to be difficult to find replacement glass for the Carreras. Will the mirror glass for the 944 fit? The mirror shapes appear very similar.

Second question - what sort of adhesive should I use to glue the glass to the backing? Will weatherstrip adhesive do the trick?

Thanks

I would say the weather strip adhesive would work well. I have used silicone adhesive sealant on a truck mirror and has held up for about 10 yrs I guess.

I have an early Durant mirror that was getting flakey on the back glazing of the mirror, this has also allowed me to pull the glass free from where it was glued, I am planning on taking it to a glass shop by work and have them cut me a new one.
I know you dont have the orig glass like I do but you may be able to make a pattern and talk to a glass shop.

Regards

The 944 mirror glass should work, but you can EASILY find a replacement mirror on the buy/sell forum for your car and mosty likely in your color too. The flag mirrors go for low dollars as well.

I do not get why you would use an adhesive as there is a locking mechanism used by Porsche unless the glass has come free of that....??

Our host sells the replacement mirror with the backing plate already there. Even though you could probably save a few dollars having a mirror cut and gluing it on, by the time you add up all the time you will have invested it is cheaper to just buy the replacement part. I've bought one of these a few years ago from our host and it was a simple project.

Yes, that's exactly what happened...the glass came free and broke. I just want the glass, not the locking mechanism, etc. Areplacement including the backing and locking mech. is about $100, which seems a lot for what I need.

Thanks

Just rx'd my glass from a vendor...and will be gluing it on (no tape adhesive, as they suggest).

Looks to fit perfectly...

same thing happened to me last year. I went to a local glass shop, who had the template. They cut and installed the mirror for a total of $15.
