Brad Penn change interval?
Yes, yes, I am aware of the Ultimate Oil thread, but please help me out here.
Early on in that thread, someone asked the question as to whether the Brad Penn 20W50 Grade 1 Racing Oil was low detergent (on account of it being labelled as a Racing Oil) and needed frequent oil changes (which I interpret as b/w 1,000mi and 2,000mi), but the question was not answered (at least not in the first 8 pages of the thread). Can someone please clarify? Also, does anyone know of a local source for Brad Penn in the San Francisco Bay Area? Much appreciated.

I'm not an expert but I use the BP in my 911. I change mine once a year when i bring it out for the driving season. That usually equates to about 5000 miles, which is when I change out dino oil. My other cars see more mileage but I usse the interval.
Being that BP is partially synthetic I figure I am good to go. YMMV

Mine gets changed once a year which has been from less than 2000 miles up to around 6000 miles. Remember you have close to 12 quarts of oil in the system. Brad Penn has a good detergent package as per the oil thread. Castrol GTX on the other hand is about gone at 3000 miles compared to BP.
Also depends on how you drive. Lots of track time and needs to be changed often. I have no problems running up to 5000 with BP even though I rarely put that many miles on in a year.

The only way to really know is to have the oil analyzed. I would drain it at 3000 miles and send it to Blackstone or another lab. They will tell you many things, one of which is the oils condition at 3000 miles and if you can go longer or should do it sooner in your car.

I can undertand for a Formula one car engine at 12000 RPM fighting for lot of $$$...Hey....c'mon,,,we're driving normal road cars.
![]() Consumer Reports, with one of the most widely respected product testing laboratories in the world has just released the results of an extensive test on oil brands and oil changes, as well as other issues regarding car care. In the process, the test demolished much of the conventional wisdom regarding car lubrication. The two most surprising results: the frequency with which oil is changed doesn't matter after the first few oil changes on a new engine, and the type or brand of oil used can not be shown to make any difference. wear. Does this have any bearing on the enthusiast's car, which is given almost the opposite usage stored for long periods of time then started and driven for short distances? The tests suggested that our type of usage would build up sludge and varnish, indicating that an annual or semi-annual oil change is a good idea regardless of how much mileage the car is driven. But there is little indication that the brand or weight needs to be given serious consideration, and synthetic oil has no discernible advantage over the old stand-bys. More information on the tests and results can be obtained from Consumers Union or the July issue of Consumer Reports available at most libraries. all_oilfaq_v1.2

I asked my mechanic about this, having the 3.6 rebuilt. He suggested 3,000 miles. After spending a bazillion $ on this thing that's what I'm doing. But why would Porsche say something like 7,000 for the 3.6?

NO WE ARE NOT.
If you are driving an old 911, it is hardly a normal road car. Instead, it is [1] old, [2] is air-cooled and thus runs much hotter than a "normal" car and [3] it has a different tappet design than a "normal" car if you are referring to the old Consumer Reports article that I read and which has been discussed before on here, then note that they evaluated taxi-cabs - which are not known for high revs. So that is another difference. 1. Use a high quality oil like Brad Penn with adequate Zn additives. 2a. Change it every 5k or 3k miles. 2b. Change it every 12 months, no matter what mileage. - those 3 very simple rules will cost a tad more now, but save you thousands later. |

Right there. Let me guess - they weren't pumping that oil through a K27 where the hot side was glowing cherry-red, were they?

Soo, what you're saying is you are taking maintenance advice from guys who rate toasters and video cameras instead of people who specialize in air-cooled Porsches.
