SC Valance options

I've been trying to figure out what to do with the front valance on my SC. Since I removed the fog lights I been mulling over options of whether to fill the holes and modify the existing valance to give more old school look or to buy a new FG "racy" style one. I just checked shipping on a valance ($325) and it would cost $125 to ship it from Cali!!!!! WTF!!!! It's only like 7 lbs and 4' long, how can it possibly be that much money!? I ain't payin 30% + of the retail price for shipping, that's insane!!
I like the simplicity of the original but my rubber "smile" has seen a better day (for the price of a replacement, if I can find one, I can buy almost any FG bumper or valance I choose). Plus I'm not a big fan of the look of the rubber lip and prefer the "all the same material" look of the older cars.
So I was thinking about ditching the rubber lip and putting a fabbed addition made of fiberglass and making it all nice nice and smooth then painting it.
Has anyone ever done that? I seem to recall someone doing one but I think it was for a backdated car.
I'm still kind new to all of this so if there is some other option I'm missing I'd appreciate the info. Are my choices just the standard-issue aftermarket bumper/valance options or stock? Is there something else I can do to keep it simple yet sporty, kind like the old ST lip?
I don't want to do a backdate but I do really like some of the charateristics of the longhoods.
Thanks in advance.

Greyhound ships for $40-50 anywhere in the US. However, you will have to do it used as no retail outfit will ship GH. I just shipped a Carrera valence this way last week or so.

As for options, you can replace the whole bumper with a FG one in a variety of styles. The GT racing catalog is great for seeing these options in 1 shot. You can also dump the valence for the narrow euro 930s style which keeps the AL bumper in place, but adds a nice racy valence.

You can also manually custom shorten the bumper and valence to make it look more 'early'. there was a recent thread w/ pics of this work. Obviously a lot more work, but very trick.

Most people just buy a whole new FG bumper in the RS/RSR style. This is the one with the big mouth up front for a center mounted oil cooler.

If you wanted a more stock/OEM look you could fill your fog lamp holes and add a front rubber lip for the Euro valence look.

These are not ALL your options, but I think I covered the top 5.

enjoy!

I had the driving light holes and license plate holes filled on my car. Still undecided on whether to put a rubber chin spoiler on. If I do I will probably cut it back where it curves around the edge of the valance.

Thanks guys.

Kiwi,
Thats kinda what I'm thinking. I'm gonna tinker with fabbing something up that looks like the old S style with the splitter.

(Oh, and thanks for the info on your muffler. I'm doing projects and collecting parts as money allows)

I struggled with the same issue for my car. I plan on doing a complete bumper modification using the original parts. I will tuck the front bumper towards the car, remove the accordions and have custom filler pieces made. I just started a project post and should have some of the in process bumper pics up this afternoon.

Project 911 “x” with introduction

As to the valance I will be using the stock unit but removing the fogs and filling all the holes. I think this will produce a nice “clean” look. The 911 club sport (below) came with just this type of valance.

I have seen them new for about $350 so I figure I can save a little and just fill the holes. Personally I do like the rubber lip, but I would think that you could remove it or fab something you like. If possible I would stay away from fiber glass that low on the car, as I am sure you know the front lip will hit all sorts of things particularly bottoming out on steep driveways etc. I think that is one of the reasons for flex rubber from the factory.

here's a before & after with fogs removed - don't fret - no original parts were maimed or destroyed during this process. All the parts came from donor pieces. I also took advantage of the situation and finally installed the oil cooler fan 'while I was in there'.

Who were you talking to about shipping?

I got a valance with rubber spoiler and fogs shipped to me for $55 FedEx ground about 8 months ago. Maybe he's charging for the box?

I have stock valence, no fogs, rubber spoiler like bkreigsr first pic. Like it

tcar,
I don't recall his name but he said it was what it cost to ship it to me in Delaware. He was a nice guy and it was more to do with the size of the box then weight, or something to that affect. The vendor was in California.
Anyway, I've since bought a "test valance" that I've tried a few techniques on and have ditched each so far. I have a new one cooking right now I just have to find the material and it'll be back to the drawing board. I'm confident I can come up with a nice clean unison look that provides a bit of downforce but doesn't scream "spoiler". The newer cars and the older cars seem to have done it, but for osme reason I guess it was just easier with rubber attached to the valance design-wise with the 80's cars. I don't HATE the rubber lip, I just think it could look better/cleaner up there. Currently I'm running it with no lip.

I do like those Bill, especially the rear . Sadly I have to park on the street so I kinda like having the rubber strips, though I've removed the big bumper guards. Someday I'd like to go with something like those not only for looks but for the weight savings as well. The smooth lines of those bumpers are very appealing to me. All that said, I'm still at the mercy of shipping fees unless I'm lucky enough to find someone on the east coast selling a used set.
