917 performance needed [part2]
Hello Porsche lovers. A little while back, I posted a request for Porsche 917 performance/handling information. These data will be used in 917, that I'm making for a computergame.
Here's what data I still need to get a realistic in-game experience... 1. a skidpad number in G's ....for handling 2. a braking figure measuring the distance it takes the car to stop from 60-0, 80-0 or something like that 3. a top speed in any gear but 6th, and that gear ratio - even though 917s had different ratios for different races, I need just 1 example so I can reverse calculate the velocity to rpm numbers for the rest of the gear ratios 4. if the car understeers or oversteers and if it is mild or a lot 5. any written articles you may have found describing how the car drives Oh, and before I forget to say: you can also reply with feedback on the car, or suggestions for it... And, of course I just have to post a picture of the carmodel, driving some French roads... ![]() To see a high-res version of it: check this link to see it. 917K (short tail) road tests with the data you are looking seem to be very hard to find, but I have some numbers compiled from several books including Peter Morgan's "Porsche 917 The Winning Formula", Boschen and Barth's "The Porsche Book", and Frere's "The Racing Porsches" :
Max power 580 to 630 bhp at 8400 RPM (for 4.5 to 5.0 L) 5 speed gearbox with LSD (locked at 75%) Ratios: 15:29, 21:29, 23:24, 26:21, 30:21 with R&P 8:37 Four speed was also available Rack and pinion 1.5 turns lock to lock, ratio 11.4: 1 Max speed in 5th 220 mph 0-62.5 mph 2.7 sec Weight 800 Kg - distributed F 36.5/R 63.5% Longtail Lateral G's 1.65 maximum Longtail Braking Deceleration G's 1.5 maximum Shotail is less The handling seemed to be initial understeer with final oversteer, especially in the wet. For road tests without data try Road & Track June 1971 and October 1980. Randy Wells |

I believe that the screenshots are from the upcoming "World Sports Cars". It was supposed to be out in the summer of 2000.

Randy, thank you very much ![]() Now the only things that are still needed are: 2. A braking figure measuring the distance it takes the car to stop from 60-0, 80-0 or something like that. 3. a sop speed in any gear but 6th 5. any written articles you may have found describing how the car drives |

Here's are a couple more sites that might be worth checking out:
www.porsche917.com.ar/index_i.htm www.porsche.com/english/motorsports/history/ Oh, and to answer your question, Jille: I personally prefer the classic Gulf/Wyer livery. Last edited by Eric Coffey; 12-27-2001 at 12:41 AM.. |

Jille,
I actually made a 3-page article of THE 917 (Herrmann/Atkins, number 23) to a Finnish magazine, but unfortunately (for you at least...) it's in Finnish language. However, I've shot zillions of pics of that particular car when it visited Finland. You'll find some of them compressed from my PCar site. Just go there -> in English -> Porsche Club Finland 30 yrs.

Goeie dag Jille,
On the motto "every little bit helps", let me translate from a French language article on the "psychedelic" Martini 917 which finished 2nd at Le Mans in 1970 (long-tail model)(no. 23 Hermann/ Attwood won the race). "...rather vicious roadholding, with only the braking at a same level of performance as the engine..." "...scary to some drivers..." "difficult to master, the 917 was a car of which the engine power was often ahead of the qualities of the chassis" "the long tail model ... faster .... but more delicate roadholding in rain" It ain't much, but it's all I got.
