my 76 build!!

Hi everyone*

Just thought I would introduce my self, my name's Matt and I just got my first Porsche. Always been a dream car of mine since I was about 8.

so i have moved this from another site so its a little bit old but it gets there

I just sold a beloved kombi I had been fixing up for a number of years but couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a 911.

I have ended up buying a 76 911 sportomatic. It needs a bit of work to get driving but not to much. It has come with a huge book full of receipts but it does need a lot of TLC as some things have been left for to long.

Any way here are some photos. Got underneath it last night and got the drive shaft out to fix the broken cv boot. It's so damn messy and oilly under there but the clean should happen this weekend if I'm lucky.

Plans are to get it all nice and cleaned up mechanically so I can drive it around for a bit and then get into the body work.

Thinking of changing it to a manual at the moment, I do like the sporto but just would love a manual. I know there are a few people hear who love the sporto and will kill me a little for changing it but I will keep everything I pull out and keep it all to then one day if I ever change back it will all be there.

Thanks for looking

Cheers Matt

so i got it all back together and gave the underside 1 of very many degreasers to get all the grim off and to start finding out where the oil leaks are coming from.

Think I have found one rather big leak coming from the oil level sensor and from what I can tell isn't going to be to fun to change.

Any way few pictures here just cause if there's none it didn't happen right.

so after many cleans it is looking okay but its 100% the triangle of death and its leaking over everything.

also have a set of compomotives that im playing around with and think they look pretty good.

they look pretty good 8x16 on the rear and 7x16 on the front looking good but might go a bit close on the rear but it was in the rear but we will see

thanks for having a looks

Been a busy week or so, have been fixing little bits here and there and just making sure the car will pass rego and fixing little bits up here and there.

First was more cleaning and scraping off lots of old oil and dirt build up on the oil tank and anything else that was under the rear and covered in grease.
I got it all looking pretty good but damn it was dirty.

Got all the lights working which took a few globes and I also got rid of the huge big ugly impact rubbers from the rear and put in some cheap little led number plate lights. They don't work to bad. I used a number plate I borrowed off another car so I could get the right spacing. Pretty cheap and are so much better than the bumperets or what ever people call them.

I then got onto fixing the windscreen washer which was a bit of a pain. It Would work when I held it together after I cleaned it but then when i put the screws back it it wouldn't. Took a bit of time but sorted it out with more cleaning and a bit of lube. Lube fixes all. When in doubt add some Lube!!

So from getting all that done I went to work on the window reg that was sitting in the bottom of the door with a bit of card holding up the glass. It took me a while cause I just couldn't find a nice photo of what I was missing. I knew I was missing the spring but wasn't sure what was broken cause there was nothing in the door and I didn't pull it apart to start with. But I found this photo and thought I would put it up just in case someone else had the same problem. I didn't get the right parts in time so I made up a bolt and nut to get the window working and will fit the new parts when it turns up.
Sorry didn't take a photo of after my fix but had it before i did and of one that wasn't broken to reference off.

Got the car all cleaned up and off to the rego place which was just next to work. Which helps.
Knocked me back on the blinker not working which just ended being a loose connector in the light housing. So got that sorted got it all regoed which has been awesome.

After that I had it on the hoist at work and so fixed my throttle cable bell crank and metal cable bit.

I tiged it all around with stainless and the sanded and polished it back up. It was repaired in the past with some brass so it splattered a bit as I burnt it out but it came out okay in the end. Forgot to get a nice before photo but after I burnt the brass out of it there was no end left at all. Wish I got a photo now. I do know there are repair kits for this parts but I was at work and had a bit if free time so gave it a go.

Been driving it a fair but and it's a pretty awesome little car.

thanks

So since the last post i didn't get up to much and then winter came so i parked it up for a bit life got in the way and then decided to drop the engine and box to tackle a few things with the engine as well as taking out the sporto trans and replace it with a gear box and fix the triangle of DEATHH

I a lot of people were telling me to keep it and gave me many reasons to keep it a sporto and I really did appreciate it, but at the end of the day I have always wanted a manual Porsche and I didn't quite feel like the sporto was for me.

It was fun and crazy to just put it in drive plant the foot and have it hust take off and just want to go faster but the exhaust note and feel just wasn't for me.

So I bought a box and all the little parts and pieces to go with it to mount the throw out fork and return spring mechanism and what not.

I'm now up to building a pedal set and have decided to put a YouTube channel together. It's my first time being behind and in front of the camera and learnt heaps from my first episode. So it isnt the best but my next clips will be better I promise.

so there will be more videos coming and more on my other project which is my 69 kombi

Thanks for having a read and i will try and keep it up to date as much as possible

Thanks Matt

Matt,

Welcome to Pelican Parts forum. I think the choice to go to a manual 5 spd is a good one. Sportomatic is probably a pretty unique driving experience, but you might as well build what you want.

I sub'd to your youtube channel. Keep the vids coming. The sporto pedal cluster was odd. That HUGE brake pedal :-o

I like the compmotives. I can't quite tell, was your car flared from the original narrowbody? It looks different especially around the front edge. Could be the light and angle.

Leave it stock looking and for the love of god don't put those wheels on it. There are very few cars around in the condition that yours is in.

Thanks for the intro and for watching and subscribing means a lot, haha yeah the pedal was crazy!!
It’s just narrow body must be the angle of the photos that make it look flared, it has had a bit of damage on the left hand side which I will need to fix.

I really like the compmotiives I have always like a 3 piece rim and these came up for a good price on an old project.

Have to say I have been following your thread/lurking for ages and watching your build, really like what you have done with your 75 such a cool car plus I think your engine was about as oilly as mine when I got it.

Cheers

I will be leaving it stock looking with a few nice touches here and there but the paint on the other side and a lot of the prep all over from when it was painted is really not good so it will get repainted as it use to be silver instead of the champagne but I will be keeping the fuchs and the other wheels too as I know a lot of people haven’t liked them but they will be on rotation.

Thanks for looking
Cheers Matt

Since the compmotiives are 3 piece, what about making the wheel closer to 7". 7 with a 225 looks amazing on these n/b cars. If you can get the ET to +32 then you can stuff a 225 /50 in there with minimal rubbing and camber. As it stands, with an 8" you will be max cambered. Not that that is the end of the world, but it could make it look more stanced vw crowd (not that there's anything wrong with that! ) You might be thinking you don't want to spend the money on new inner wheel sections, but think about the outlay you will have on tires. Close to a grand when all said and done (shipping, balancing, etc etc)

Also I would demote that wheel project until after you get the 5speed and the engine degreased. Drive it for a while like that, then head to wheel town.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum, Matt.

If your heart desires a manual transmission in your 911, you should definitely do it! I do like the Compomotives. Haven't seen any on a narrow body yet.

Can't wait to see your build progress further!

Ooo thanks for the info I will try and see what to get as close to that as I can, as you said either vw stance which isn’t to bad but a nice fat tire would look so much better. Love a good fat tire on a wheel

But yeah “wheel town” is a long way down the list of things to do, got the engine to reseal up and the new gear box to put in. Need it on the road rather than in the shed.
Keen to get into the engine tho. Got to build me a engine yoke first

Cheers

Thanks for the welcome Eric
Really keen to get the wheels on there but need to get it back on the road again first.
But thats the plan I got the new gearbox and all the other parts I should need to get it all to work. We will see if I missed anything tho.

Thanks again

Cheers Matt

great!
get These Fuchs painted in OEM style and this silver narrow body will be a stunner!

and: as bad as it may sound, but at the end ist sooo rewarding: drop that engine and trans to adress all issues properly.

okay so wondering if anyone can help, i have to do my wiring next and cleaning up a few bits as i now have an internal reg alternator from what i can work out and so have three wires just chilling next to the CDI and thinking cause im tiding up the wiring can i just delete them?
i might get some pictures but thought someone might just be able to tell me.

also i was wondering if anything who has changed a sporto to manual and can tell me what they did with the neutral switch? from what i have been told that in a sporto there is the shifter in neutral wires/switch that i will have to wire up so the car doesnt think its not in neutral and wont start.

Any help would be amazing

Thanks Matt

The 3 extra wires - are they together in one black connector? They might be for the old external voltage regulator that was mounted next to the CDI.

Here's the old wiring layout with the external voltage regulator:

Here's where the old external voltage regulator was mounted (#8):

And here's how they changed from an external to an internal voltage regulator:

Welcome to the '76 club! What's the specs on those Comp wheels? Those 8" look to be just about the right offset in the rear.

This looks like it's going to be an awesome build - personally, I'm a big fan of sporto models; their rarity and use in races back in the end is quite cool; but I completely understand the swap to a proper manual gearbox.

Post this up in our DIY Build Contest - we're giving away a $1000, $500, and $250 gift card.
