1987 Targa / What Modifications - Car all Original

Just purchased 87 Targa, 82K Miles, No modifications/ all original except radio and speakers. The car has had all its maintenance: 75k service, new Cat installed, new AC compressor, New clutch and flywheel, targa top redone my Dan at Cars Inc. New shocks all around lowered to ROW spec, alignment, corner balance, Refinished Fuchs, just repainted front bumper, anything this car needs..it gets! Everything works as it should, front fender and rear quarter repainted about 15 years ago...looks pretty good...paint about 8.5 out of 10....car looks and runs great..even AC works, but needs recharge every other year

Now..here is my problem..I want to play (add something..performance mods???)looking at all the parts, toys, performance mods..what should I I add/change? Anything? What I don't want to do is turn my all original targa into a "teenage racer"

What performance mods can I make without tuning this into a non-original car...

Was thinking just a pre-muffler and SW chip...any recommendations?

As one who has a "teenage racer", I'm probably not one to advise. But, a pre-muff and a chip will wake it up, and are easily removed.

911 max chip or steve wong chip will GREATLY enhance drivability. I can't recommend either one enough. I have the same car as you except its a MY 89. Same color, but yours looks to be in much better shape! Go drive it!

Thanks for your response...Will adding pre-muffler & SW chip put additional stress on motor?

You just got it. learn to appreciate what you have before you change anything, that way you will notice the difference. Do some track days.

Chip I don't think so. It really gets rid of the mid-range lag. I live in LA so visited Steve and he went out with me on the freeway on a Sunday morning and he plugged in his laptop to my car and data logged it and then burned me a custom chip for my car which is a US EPA certified gray market ROW with a cat. The chip was made for MY car. Very cool.

Being the owner of the Twin of your car I can from experience, reccomend at Steve Wong chip along with a fabspeed pre-muffler and M&K 1in 1 out muffler. This is what I did to my 88 targa and It made a big difference in the overall driveability.

Nice find , purdy. Your looking at a slippery slope but seem to have a good couple of idea's in mind. Chip's and exhaust's are easily changed and offer noticeable improvement's .Welcome to the club.

Beautiful Targa & Low miles too.......Welcome, I wouldn't do much more than the chip/exhaust.......Keep it pretty stock if you can......Maybe up grade the struts/shocks to Bilsteins or something like that.......

Nice car, you did well, we have an '86.

Drive it for a while, then determine if any modifications are needed.

We upgraded our A/C with the Rennaire Pro-Cooler and High flow evaporator,
and re-adjusted the A/C temp switch (as per one of my previous posts).

You might want to install a 210F thermostat for your oil cooler fan,
as the factory is set at 248F.(Toasty warm!).

Check proper fusing for:

1. The footwell blowers.(10A)
2. The front condenser fan.(10A)
3. The evaporator relay-Pelican parts has the relay.
4. Add headlamp relays-Pelican parts has the kit.

Verify that your rear window defogger is fully functional (3 elements).

Purchase "Collector Car" insurance with AAA. (Save big bucks!!!).

You may pm me.

Good luck,

Gerry

Louder....yes, but it is not at all LOUD. It has a good tone, but not at all intrusive.
Hey I'm an old guy I dont need excessive amount of noise.
I would chime in with the others when they say .....first drive it and find out what you need/want and try to keep it as stock as you can.

I think most everyone has covered was you can do, I have a 84 targa, being that I use mine mostly for the track I did suspension first and loosing weight, but then did the fabspeed bypass, M&K 1in1out, and SW chip. Like this configuration, but this year I replaced that with a set of headers and a M&K 2in2out and had Steve reprogram the chip, maybe a few more hp but also weight lost.
