'87 Carrera radio options?
I know the Blaupunkt Reno is supposed to be correct, but when I got the car in '00, it had a Monterey cassette deck in it that I thought was original. Certainly looked the part.
The LCD display was glitchy, and stupidly, I tossed it back then in favor of a more modern CD-playing Blaupunkt. Broke my own cardinal rule about never throwing out anything from a vintage vehicle. But back then, my 50K mile Carrera was a $20K used car, I was younger, didn't really plan for the far future, etc. Well, that newer Blaupunkt died, and now that I'm older and more annoying, I want to go back to stock. But as I'm sure many of you know, the Reno radios are now about $1K. Insane. And I wouldn't feel good about modifying one at that price to accept a phone adapter. What can I substitute that would be cheaper but period-correct? So many Blaupunkt cities to choose from...

Blaupunkt Charleston was also optional in '87.

Just to close out this thread, I ended up getting a Reno after all. Thought I got a good deal when I snagged it for around $550 on eBay, and all was well until about 5 minutes into programming in the radio presets when something popped and the radio died. Aaargh!! Stupid Reno. These things were selling for $50 not too long ago. Damn you, wealthy purists! Damn you, supply and demand!
When my last Blaupunkt died, I tossed it and left the car radio-less for about 5 years. Now that the stakes are higher, I wasted no time in getting the Reno repaired. I sent it in to Creative Car Audio in Brea, CA. Insured the crap out of it for shipping. Turns out a capacitor had popped. Had them fix it, replace some bulbs, and added an aux. audio input. About $350 total. So the radio ended up costing about $900 after all. Stupid. At least I no longer have that hole in the dash after tossing out the last dead Blaupunkt. Now that a functioning radio is back in place, I've discovered that my front speakers don't work. All 4 speaker outputs on the radio work, so it's not that. Ugh. Meh. I was a little dispirited at this point, and not too motivated to do a better job installing the aux. input jack. Zip ties for you, Reno! Side note: I have a '91 Ferrari 348 that also needed a radio. Thankfully, they weren't specced with a radio from the factory, though they were pre-wired for one. Had they been, I'm sure it would cost a similar arm and leg to replace. Instead, I was able to snag a super sweet period-correct Alpine for $225 INCLUDING the remote CD carousel (remember those?). This may be the only instance when a Ferrari is cheaper to own. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
