Second gear problems!

So I am feeling pretty good as my 73 MFI is finally running better (not perfect, however) after a long engine rebuild. And then all of a sudden I can't find second gear AND third feels very strange, like I am in fifth, but the revs tell me I am not. The car is a 73 911t with a stock transmission with 89,000 miles. Any thoughts as to what is going on?
Thanks in advance, Mark

First thing to do is to check the easiest part and that's the coupler. Did you replace the clutch, pp, etc. during the rebuild?

tobluforu, yes I replaced the clutch and pressure plate during the rebuild. When I check the coupler, what am I looking for? (probably obvious, just new at this) Thanks, Mark

Sorry, do a search on adjusting coupler as it may have become loose and slipped or has a hell of a lot of freeplay due to the bushing being worn. If the bushing has any slop, replace. If it looks good, go through the procedure of adjusting the coupler as maybe it will be this easy.

The bushings in the stock coupler are slightly oval so there will be a little slop, even when new. The key is "excessive slop"

Yes. In fact, check all three bushing areas: shift coupler, front of shift tube and end of shift lever. These are all normal wear areas that accentuate "normal play" due to the distance from shifter to gearbox.

So I took out the four screws to get at the shifter coupling and laying in the bottom of the tunnel was the bushing, in about four pieces. I will take your advise and replace all three bushings mentioned. The link was a great help and once I get the parts from Pelican, I will be on my way again.

Awesome as it's nice when it's an easy/inexpensive fix.

So I finally got some time to install the shifter coupling bushings. What I can't figure out is how do I get the bushings in? The flange on the bushings seem to go next to the shaft which locks it into place. How do I get the T-shaped metal rod out to put the bushings in?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Most people use sockets and a vice.

you have to press it out using a couple of different size sockets and a vice.

I installed a Wevo coupling which has 0 play. Great addition.
