Hey, that vanagon is here! We have looked after it for a while now. The engine is currently a 2.7 non turbo. Runs just fine.

We also did a '76 bus with a 3.0SC motor and 915 five speed.

that Vanagon is awesome!

ever thought of this: while there are some out there that say that putting a turbo Porsche motor in a van is awesome.... there's just as many if not more that think that hacking up a Vanagon to put "some mongrel Porsche motor" in it is an abomination. in many cases the same people that think that putting a japanese or american car motor in a Porsche is an abomination think that putting a Porsche motor in a Japanese or American car is ok. go figure that one out

personally, i think it's pretty cool. seeing that sort of craftsmanship and customization is awesome. they have a one-off Vanagon that is fairly sleeper other than the wheels and a few tidbits here and there. i don't know how i'd feel with that much power sitting in a vehicle with a centre of gravity that high though. seems like it would be sort of scary if you took a turn too quick.

Several weeks ago I saw a white Vanagon at the Pomona swap meet. it had 18" turbo wheels, big red brakes, and a 3.6 motor with 5 (or maybe it was a 6?) speed tranny from a wrecked late model Porsche.
The builder evidently works for a company that does R&D for Porsche and Audi.
The van reportedly has all the right suspension parts to make it handle well, including aftermarket coil over struts.
The more we checked it out the better it looked. Sale price was estimated at around $50,000.
Sure would be fun at a stoplight next to some Acura with a 6" fart pipe for an exhaust!

I got beat to the idea. Except I was thinking a quattro (or other awd system) and a 993TT engine with a completely stock looking exterior save needed upgrades (eg. tires, ect.).

If a little is good, a lot must be better!

duh, just remembered, steal the drivetrain from a C4

I had a 914 w\1.7 motor in it. When I met a guy that had the same car but w\ a rotary motor in it, I almost went to the dark side. After a ride and him pegging the end of the tach in second and third, i was sold. Then my tranny blew, I sold it and bought toblu. The motor LOOKED like it belonged in that car. Oh well... I much happier now anyways but, I still do think of building a sleeper like that.
