Almost a Floor Jack Nightmare

My '73 911T has been lowered 2" by the previous owner. I was preparing to put it on the small 3 Ton Harbor Freight Jack Stands yesterday when I got this horrible feeling.

I used a HF Low Profile 2 Ton Floor Jack with a metal pad stuck into the tire changing jack lifting point. I jacked the car up far enough to put the left rear stand under the torsion bar protrusion. So far so good. I couldn't get a stand under the front torsion bar point, so I continued to jack the car up. The car lifted off the rear stand but still didn't lift high enough to place the front stand.

My fear was that I was going to flip the car over on its side. And even if I could have gotten the front stand under, the right side lifting point would be so low that I wouldn't be able to get the floor jack under it.

This car is really low and is not making hoisting this thing any easier. Any suggestions here?!!

Get a couple 2x10's or 2x12's. Drive up on those which will raise your car enough to get the jacks under properly

Good luck

Arrow Ramps

I needed 4" to clear the scissor lift.

They need to be tied together (not shown above but it's in one of the pics in the link below) as they might start to slip as you jack the car one side at the time.

Also if you don't want to build ramp you could jack the car on one side, slide 1 piece or 2 of 2X12 under each wheel go jack the other side ans so on, after a while you should have the clearance to put the jack stand.

Or get a scissorlift :

I use the engine to jack up the rear ( do a search), and then put the two rear stands in place.

I then jack up the front using the "crash bar" that is installed to protect the A/C condensor. I find that it is plenty strong but you need to use caution and work slowly so it doesn't slip off the jack. I have a plate welded to the bar to prevent this from happening. I am A/C delete but maintain this bar exclusively for this purpose.

If my jack is ready and the stands are out it takes 5 minutes and the car is up off the ground on 4 jack stands.

This thread may help Where To Jack Rear To Install Engine?

This is my preferred method. I had my SC slip off of a jack stand using the side-to-side method a few years ago. Raising the car under the engine seems more stable to me and I have not had an incident using this method.

Oui mon ami

A lift is the best buy one can do after getting a Pcar.

I think that s_morrison57 is just about to make the jump.

Not convince yet... Check this post for background info and photos; Hemi Roadrunner Scissor Lift

We are not all lucky like my friend nineball who pickup a good used one for peanuts.

Tom:

When all of your tires are in the air, can you get your Jack Stands in place? If not, you may want to consider getting shorter Jack Stands.

For my car, I have a set of short 1 1/2 ton stands I use in the front and 3 tons for the back. The 3 ton stands will not fit under the front no matter how high I can jack.

Harry,

I sprung for the 4 - 10"x2"x12' boards and will deck-screw them together this evening after it cools off a bit. Not as hot today as in Portland but, then again, I'm a wimp!

I think this will work. I will gain about a 3.75" advantage and that should do it. I cut one board off 6' to creat a sort of ramp. These are the smallest jack stands that Harbor Freight sells.

bummer that you got the 10" boards. 12" give you a little room on either side of the tires while the 10" require you to be almost perfectly placed.

I use 2x6 turned on the side 7 wide for each side bolted together with a 20 degree angle cut at the ramp end .........

also grizzfan the smallest is not usually the best for the usage, I use a set of five ton when i lift to stands, true each will hold individually the total weight of my car but that gives me a little sense of calm when i am under them .........

Cheap man's lift. Use two floor jacks to raise the front, then a single floor jack to raise the rear.
