What is this ?
Got this from a german auto repair shop here on long island. Says becker on it so it must be radio related. The guy has about 20 p-cars all early 911 or 356. I go there from time to time looking for goodies. Today I bought a truck load of parts which I hand picked (I scored) . In the piles of parts that were allready dismanteled I found this. Could anybody name the part and its correct vintage. Its possible its not even a porsche part but should be.

Could it be an old A/C-to-12V power supply (converter) for bench-testing radios?

Take the cover off. Does it have vacuum tubes?

Doug is hot on the trail.......
In the [very] old days, the radio console contained the volume, tuning, and power controls only. The rest was too darn big to fit in the console. What I think you have there is the 'remote' side of one of these early radios. It contains the RF stages and audio amplifiers, all of which were hollow state technology - vacuum tubes. If you can find a becker model number anywhere, the 'men in plaid' might be interested - many early 356s had these ripped out in favor of the later on-piece transistorized units. This might be a nice find for the true 356 resto fiends.

Also on the becker sticker it has the word UMRICHTEN and the # 286075. Although im not sure about the 8. Here are some more close ups. Yes there is glass vaccum tubes and it also very heavy.

Nice museum piece!
Any electronic gear you find these days containing "bottles", is worth keeping for the sake of nostalgia, if nothing else. Don't expect it to work...the electrolytic capacitors are probably well past their prime. Heavy? Sure...the power supply and audio output transformers would be huge by todays standards. Beefy iron cores and copper windings. It likely has an inverter section to convert 6-12vdc to the higher AC voltage the bottles require. More tubes and transformers. The chassis may be made out of copper sheet as well (for heat disipation and freedom from E.M.I.).

You guys are correct. The older radios have two parts. The front portion is the rx of the radio. The back portion that you have is the amp portion of the radio. It bolts to the rx with a couple of metal straps. Depending on the vintage many of the early amps operate on 6V or 12v. As far as value its not worth much, as Doug stated the caps are probably dry. Now if you had the front end (the rx) to it and if it was working it would be worth $100.00 PLUS (to someone like me looking for an old tri-band 6V for my 356)!!!
