K-kar 82 sc biggish oil leak
Hello All
I drove in to Vancouver from home (approx 1 hour drive) and noticed a substantial oil leak on tight rear side of engine. I have recently completed a major tune up and valve adjust, plus heater backdate, ac delete. New cap rotor plugs and wires. Did all wirk myself so that is likely cause but i cannot seem to see the leak source. There is a small pool of oil under right side heater backdate tin. Any ideas? Tow truck on the way. I suggest you clean everything up and get it all dry.
Then, with the engine lid up, start the engine and observe where you see oil. The oil pressure sender could fail (bit unusual, I think). The rubber part of the oil lines which feed the cams can start leaking. The pressure tensioner little line might have gotten loose at the nut connecting it to the cam line (bit unlikely). These little lines have been known to break, and maybe just crack? The big metal block the oil pressure sender screws into is held in place by a hollow bolt, whose outer end attaches to the cam oil line. Because it is hollow, and has some holes in it, if you overtighten it it can crack (or break completely, but you'd know that - I can't tell from the pictures just how bad this is. I've seen suggestions that after your thorough cleaning you sprinkle some powder (flour? baking soda?) around the area and any likely sources there before running the engine. Should help spot where the oil first appears. Check the right side intake valve cover. Don't overtighten, but see if the oil might have come from there. Also check the big banjo which holds the cam oil line to the cam carrier - sometimes you have to reposition the banjo to get the valve cover off or on. That bolt can take a fair amount of torque if the sealing washers are leaking (though replacing them isn't a bad idea if there are leaks from where they are). |
