Engine choice for new project - 68 hot rod with ST flares
I'm embarking on a new project and wanted some thoughts on an engine for it. The car is a 68 911 with st style flares, fiberglass bumpers and hood, etc. Because it's already a sort of hot rod, I'm wrestling with the engine to fit.
I have a choice of: 1) stock 3.2 - but would need to do a valve job 2) 2.5 short stroke with S cams and webers - new parts, but needs to be assembled. 3) original 2.0 - running, but a 2.0 ![]() Either way, it's going to be fit to a new 901 box - I just like the 901 shift pattern. Cost isn't really an issue as I have all the engines just sitting here. Thanks Andrew M

Andrew,
My vote: 2.5S Put a steel bumper back on the front (preferably the ‘72S version). Make great effort to lighten everything in the rear. Install LWB front suspension and steering. Install the normal suspension up-rates but make sure you maintain lots of suspension travel. With the standard 5-speed, you have good AFMSX gear ratios. Depending on your driving, there are other choices. Drive & enjoy. Best, Grady

Thanks Grady - i'm really happy with the 2.6 in my 70E and am leaning towards the 2.5 for the 68

Hey Andrew, you don't even have it yet
![]() And if you want to skip using the ST front flares, I do have a set of R Fibergalss Fenders, or you can fix up the original steel ones. And I have a original SWB front steel bumper that I welded the trim mounting holes up, it is pretty cool and would give you a real neat, smooth look. would take a bunch of work to use with the ST fenders though.
